Feeling so Valuable

Searching a bit more in the article I came across ISP Subscriber Value. My alter ego still has a AOL account...and AOL values me as subscriber to the tune of $2,980. hee hee I did not realize I was "worth" so much...A prodigy subscriber is valued at $157.

Actually joking aside what is really sobering is the report of how many dollars it takes to produce one dollar of revenue for the ISP's. Makes you want to cry!

It's interesting that AOL is number one, and the only reason I see MSN being #2 is those $400 instant rebates they had at Best Buy, CompUSA, etc.

And that was pretty interesting AOL values us so much (my "alter ego" has aol too hehe)

Very interesting list.....

Broadband never made it into the store

Wonder when Best Buy, CompUSA, et al will begin to sell cable/DSL modems in their retail stores?

Circuit City claims in their latest TV ad to be selling them, but I have yet to see any in the stores since an old MediaOne promotion was dropped.

And I wonder how many customers buy those ubiquitous "broadband routers" and take them back for a refund after discovering they don't actually do what most people want them for--connect your PC to a cable or DSL service?

700 Hours for AOL? Why not UnLimit for 1 month?

Wow..That's incredible!!..But do you use all 700Hrs in 1 month?? Only if you run your PC for 24Hrs a day and 31 days a month with "Dial up" telephone line always ON.

24Hrs a day X 31 Days a month = 744Hrs a month.
744Hrs - 700Hrs = 44Hrs -- still have time for PC to cool off and call to cancel without charge!

I've mentioned this before, but I even saw AOL advert hangers around the necks of OLIVE OIL in the supermarket. Their marketing dept. is mad.

I haven't used AOL in a couple of years now, and i still get those CD's thru the mail about every three months. I just throw the disc away, and keep the case. They work great! Thanks AOL

Juno doesn't get it!

I was one of Juno's "free internet" customers for several years, but it wasn't their rather calculating stragegy of making free access progressively more inconvenient and inaccessible that finally made me leave them... the last straw was a recent terms-of-service change where they asserted their "right" to use free subscribers' machines for their own supercomputing purposes, including having it dial Juno periodically.

I don't have a problem with projects like SETI or similar applications... but I do object to having an outsider making changes to my system without my explicit knowledge or consent. I object to an outsider telling me what I can't do with my own equipment (can't turn it off, can't disable their screensaver, can't keep them from using my phone line whenever they want). And I especially object to the manipulative approach that seems to characterize Juno's business stragegy.

So in my case at least, Juno's strategy backfired. They wanted to nudge me toward paying them $15 a month. Instead, they shoved me right into the arms of Verizon DSL, at nearly triple the cost. And guess what? I'm glad they did!

I don't get deals on anything. Sigh.

DTV alludes to my profession (broadcast engineer at a Digital TV facility), no connection with Telocity.

Actually, I felt more like I was escaping the devil...

Yeah. We'd have to warp the space time continuum during February. (;))

Bring You Own Access to AOL & get double counted

Wonder how those numbers would look if all the folks who "Bring Your Own Access" (log into AOL via a REAL ISP) were subtracted?

But then again, who cares? Interesting thought though...

Re: Broadband never made it into the store

Actually, Circuit City (like Best Buy, etc.) is already selling broadband modems in their retail stores. I'm sure the rest will follow soon enough.

Shows what they know

Shows what they know, they put AOL as #1 and the big MS as #2! And a FREE ISP made the list!?!? Where are the REAL ISP's? Who was doing the testing, their 6-year-olds that dont know anything?

RCN left off list! Should have been #18

RCN has approx. 1/2 million ISP customers as of 3/31/01.

Why!

DSL from southwestern bell is way better than DSL from AOL because there is too many people connecting to the same server and that slow down the connection at AOL. Southwestern bell software uses less memory than AOL software. That saves memory on your computer. You don't have to open up such a big Application as AOL to connect up to the internet. That is why!

Top 20 List? Big Deal...

There's only about 20 ISP's left... And you can't count cable providers. They don't have to do nuthin' to get people hooked up. Why don't they have a Top 20 Bankrupt ISP list. See who owed the most cash when they crashed.

Netzero=zero market share

Notice in the piechart where NetZero has a 0% market share? maybe they should change their name to ZeroNet. Also, wouldn't AOL Time Warner, by definition, include Roadrunner? What's also interesting is that "all other U.S. ISP's" together would rank second. The share of these miscellaneous companies show just how little MSN and AOL have broken into our homes. I hope.

Re: 700 Hours for AOL? Why not UnLimit for 1 month?

Acually AOL did have an unlimited for 1 month .. but i think due to marketing 700 hours free sounds better than 1 month free thats why AOL changed it. And there's always a big chance most ppl will not read the fine print and think its 700 hours vs only 700 hours for the first month.
