maybe 51/51mbps to the house down the street, what about to Australia? and the USA? your speeds I bet would be like 3000/3000 by the time it hits the states, not worth it IMO.

All fine and dandy

Ok

So they have 600megabit to businesses ect...

What difference does that make unless you only need to connect to other places in Korea?

What if you want to connect to outside korea? Ok, you have say, 20 businesses at 600+ megabit, but what difference does that make when the country's bandwidth is limited to say, 10 gigabit pipe?

(ust pulling the numbers out of my head, just using as example, no flameing)

6 megabit DSL

6 megabit DSL i snice if you can get it. The fastest I would want or need right now is 10 megabits up/down if it were affordable.

In 5 years we will all have DSL 2+

Why it is so cheap over in Korea...

Currently posting in Korea right now...

An entry level DSL that I am using right now is rated at 2 mbits down/1 mbits up. It costs 20$ a month.

Currently, the fastest all-over-the-country DSL option is rated at 12 mbits both ways, for 50$ a month.

... Comparing to the Comcast service I subscribed back in USA, 3 mbits down/256 kbits down for... 56$ a month.

Hmm...

The thing is however, Korea telecommunication industry used to be pwnt by a single large conglomate (like old AT&T) known as Korea Telecom (shortened as KT). Then the government stepped in and divided it into multiple companies.

Currently, there are 3 major telecommunication companies, KT, SK, and HanaroTelecom (that services phone as base service), along with few underdogs serving DSL connection. 3 major? The big thing is the following:

These companies, along with few others, are vying for customer monies in Seoul. Yes, in a single city, there are at least 3 major telcos and few others competing.

I'd say if every major cities in USA had at least 3 major telcos fighting for monies, I'd say situation would be a bit more improved than it is right now.

That's my 2 cents.

Maybe I can wait in line for downloads just that much faster... or bring up my email at the speed of... or use trillian at... er... hmmm... porn?

Re: delete me

jc100 maybe you should live in South Korea, since you hate America so much. Or maybe you are a product of modern American education and were taught America was "evil capitalist empire". Is English is your second language?
can't -- cant (spell-check)
capitalism -- capitlism (spell-check)
when is -- whens (where did you come from??)
don't -- dont (spell-check)

What does a polite telemarketer, or honest car salesman have to do with this topic, and yes I have had both. My cable service is just fine.

In the places such as EU and Asia, they are technology drive,(did you mean driven)and therefore, the government pushes for it.. Yes in the USA, where the is no drive, it just isnt (isn't) happening. Nor is intelligent thought from you, if you hate it here and we have no drive and you still stay what does that say about you and where is your drive did the linkage break?? or is this a run on sentence.

Still having fun in America despite its faults.

Psh, no big deal.

Canada's not that far behind. By 2005 Bell Canada is giving us 8 Mbps, and by 2006 it was planned 26 Mbps. Recent news suggests that because Bell is giving us FTTN (Fibre To The Node/Neighbourhood), we could be getting 100 Mbps!

I can't wait for 2006 to roll around, lmao.

Drats!

50+ meg connections and my puny ISP (Adelphia) can't maintain a measly 3000/256. To say I was jealous would be an understatement.

Clogged like my toilet after some KFC

Heh, those lines will be clogged in no time with warez, spam and pr0n. Real-world values they would get will probably be less than what we get here in the USA.

Re: Delete me

I don't know exactly what is happening in the US but here in the UK BT are rolling Adsl out over the whole country. Then SDSL and finally 5Mbit broadband to provide Television over the line. For areas which are too far from the exchange RADSL is available and in areas without BB trigger levels are set and if a set number of people register. Bt activate their exchange within three months. Currently in every region at least 72% of residents have access to Adsl and most exchanges now have trigger levels. Bt isn't the only adsl provider they only run the exchanges and once activated any adsl provider can sell broadband. It is almost the exact opposite to America where the Telcos are playing catch up. The cable cos are trying to catch up with the telcos as all areas with cable also have access to adsl and as a result the prices keep dropping. Clearly this wouldn't work in America as it is a much bigger country and there is no national telco. I know we pay more tax but surely that isn't always a bad thing?

Well I just looked up Germany's taxes which was one of the countries I referred to and income taxes there are 45% if you make 52 thousand euro's per year. A Euro is about a dollar. I can tell you that taxes on 52K dollars/year in the USA are much lower than 45%.

No its NOT about a dollar , for one euro you get 1.25 US $ , so that makes it around $65 k. If you're single , you're playing WELL over 30% in US. Of course there are tax cuts possible but so are in Germany.

And no you dont pay import taxes if you buy something from local store.
