Comments on news posted 2004-12-29 09:55:38: One German ISP is offering something many of our users have lusted after for some time: bare bones, no frills DSL. Congster offers DSL for €3.99 (around $5.40) a month, with no email address or SMTP access, and limited technical support. ..

Those type of caps aren't 100% unusual for Europe. From what I've read and been told over the years. But it is nice to see that users actually have a choice. Although many here could go through those caps in a matter of days.

Uh - when did ISPs start supporting browsers? All they give you are proxy settings (if required)... That's how it works in Singapore.

Re: Perfect for parents

ask any isp tech support, specially "mom&pop" oriented ones like AOL, Juno, NetZero, Netscape isp, others.
they'll tell you how clueless some people are, and how they expect support from their isp to handle their lcd monitors :/

"budget" ISPs usually attract 2 type of people:
1) tech savvy people who don't need extra junk
2) clueless people who think they are getting the same for less.

2GB per month is more than sufficient even for the avid email checker & browser, as long as you're not doing video and huge file transfers all the time. My two computers at home are on 24x7. I work from home on VPN three times a week. My monthly usage just barely crosses 1.2GB... Sounds like a great deal - whats the upload/download speed?

Not bad if your not into downloading movies...in fact, with Bittorrent disappearing quicker ummm, errr, nevermind, anywho, this is great for people who only surf, download a couple songs, but still don't want to suffer from dial-up let down. I'm happy paying $34/month for unlimted. Did 50 GB up/down last month...so there.

The article summary is wrong, it is 1.39c per extra megabyte, per the register article.

1,390 euros a gig would be a bit much...

Nice idea, but...

"No SMTP access?" Does that mean port 25 is blocked, hence no sending email? Or does it mean the service doesn't include an email address/server? I would hope it's the latter. Though barebones DSL users could still use webmail.

EDIT: Guess I should have read the article before posting: "But there is a catch: Congster is a stripped-down Internet access service, without an email address or SMTP access. Tech-savvy subscribers should run their own mail server, or stick to webmail services such as Hotmail. Additional services such as premium content and anti-virus software are also not available." Guess that means you can run your own mail server if you like. Hey, I'd go for it.

Also, additional bandwidth tiers at set prices would be beneficial for heavier users who would rack up a huge bill for exceeding the caps, that is, tiers above 8GB. Like 20GB, 40GB, etc.

2 dollars per megabyte if you go over the cap? So if you accidentaly say... leave bitorrent open overnight, you could end paying a thousand dollars in overages? are you fucking kidding me. I sure hope they automatically cut off your connection once you go over a certain point.

Then don't do that.

Its not like this ISP is playing games with caps and associated costs. You already know the caps and associated costs when you sign up.

Yeah, loan sharks let you know up front how they're going to charge you sky-high interest rates and break your legs when you don't pay, too. $2 a MB is highway robbery.

Geesh, all some people do is bitch bitch bitch.

First off, this service is for people who don't use the net that much at all: Mom and dad for email (using Hotmail or Yahoo or even GMail) and maybe a text chat program (AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, etc.)

No one is going to be using bit torrent, newsgroups, downloading from IRC or Linux distros with this service. This is NOT meant for them. It is meant for those who rarely use the service.

dood, lighten up. so you disagree with someone elses statements. welcome to real life. just fyi, there is nothing anywhere that satisfies everyone all the time (unless its a snickers bar and even then you have to wonder coz some people dont like nuts or caramel and then they have to eat a 3 musketeers and it just gives them an empty feeling....i could go on and on about nothing but your post beat me to it.) take a step back and chill out. it's a forum, a free excahnge of ideas, so you dont agree, that's your right but dont bitch about it. it wastes my time and everyone elses. sorry ot

edit: im sure youve replied by now but i make hard use of the ignore function, as i am sure some people ignore my posts due to disagreements with what i say and how i say it, i now ignore yours. again i sincerely apologize for the OT reply but i've been here long enuf to have opinions too.

When was the last time you LEARNED something cool from this forum?

DSL reports is so getting filled up with flamewars and "give me all I can handle, and make it cheap" attitudes that I may just edit my HOSTS files to direct *.dslreports.com to something useful, like hellokitty.com or something!

Anyway you get the idea, less bitch and more discussion on USEFUL topics! Just lose the attiude of "oh, look a cheap service, but it doesn't support my P2P addiction."

Case in point, your posts.

I'm not bitching about the fact that it is capped, or that 2 GB isn't enough, or that €3.99 is too much for 2 GB/month.

I myself am saying that the cost per MB overage rate it insane. Downloading a Linux ISO could cost you over €1000 if you are over the cap. That is unreasonably high and not justified by the actual cost that the provider would incur. In other words, IMO it's cheap DSL where they up-front let you know they're going to bend you over and rape you if you use it more than 2 GB/month, and also IMO they PLAN ON PEOPLE GOING OVER so they can make lots of money.

For crying out loud, they sell you the service for €2 per GB, and then charge half that PER MEGABYTE when you are over. Does that sound FAIR to you?

Do you know what sprint or any other major cell phone provider charges you for going over your minutes?

This service clearly is for people to go to web mail site, do some emails, casual surfing (not video downloading, etc.) and thats it.

Yes, as a matter of fact I do. Sprint charges $.40 a minute for over your allotted minutes, so if I take the $30 I pay for 300 minutes, that's about $.10 a minute; So they charge 4x as much for going over.

But we're not talking about DSL service that charges 4x as much for going over, we're talking a DSL service that charges €1 per 512 MB for the first 2 GB, and then just over 700 TIMES AS MUCH for each MB thereafter, i.e. .72 MB per €1 vs. 512 MB per €1.

I realize this plan is for light users. That's fine. That still doesn't make the 700x rate hike for going over the limit any less ridiculous.

Yeah my Mom in WI could use this type of service. The ONLY isp's she can get are the local telco for $20/mo dial-up or Charter for $30/month for 256meg cable(on second thought I'm not sure charter has cable modems at her new addy). The $10 isp's the rest of us in the metro areas have are not available there.

That's GOT to be a typo; surely it must be per gigabyte.

I doubt any users with that plan would be running BT anyhow. This would be PERFECT to get folks off up dialup!

look at these plans, they arent ment for downloaders or gamers. the target market is those who want broadband for surfing the net and checking email(hotmail of course lol since no smtp) without the long waits of dialup. its definatly something that should be done here in the US so that people with lower incomes can get off of dialup.

I think thats the norm in Europe ..

..to pay for bandwidth. So the bandwidth cap is not a big surpise, thats the norm no matter what servive you get.

I love the idea, it would go over good here. (minus the caps on bandwidth). You can use email from other places on the web, so thats not a big deal. I don't think i've heard of people actully using "portals" or the "free" downloads of antivirus/security software lots of ISP offer. You know ISP are getting dumb when they want to offer internet caching programs with a ISP. lol

It's like Fishing....

Once the company catches their bait (a customer), the customer will want more and more and will upgrade their line to faster speeds.

It's a perfect solution for people who need a stable connection but don't want to pay the $40-$50/mo.

Not a bad deal, if you can get it.

Why not? Sometimes you just want the cheeseburger (or perhaps the bratwurst ) without the extra large fries and drink.

Same with DSL. If there was broadband being offered at those prices stateside, dialup would be a moot point. Cheapest dialup (apart from the free services) is on average $7-$8 a month right? Cheap solution for someone who isn't a power user.

It's probably been mentioned before, but it was around 14 euros per GB in overages, not 1,400 per GB.

Yeah, but I'd imagine that if you were willing to lay down say, $500 on the latest Radeon card to run UT2004 or HL2 or Splinter Cell, you'd probably pay a little more for broadband that fits your gaming needs.

Then again, with some of the pricey gaming rigs I've seen my pals build, they could use $5 a month braodband.

No frills high speed please.

What I would love a nofrills highspeed line

-full speed with 0 caps
-ZERO technical support (yes zero, a recording wether or not their service is up will do just fine)
-no newsgroups
-no email
-no webspace

Thats right, just a pipe to the intarweb. Would be great if without the things that I mentionned above they could shave off, say $10 bucks a month. That would rock.

Excellent

I'd totally spring for something like this. I have never used any ISP's tech support or email services. I don't need any dumbed-down portals either (I can find my own content, thank you very much).

Just give me a bare-bones, unbundled 512/512 for $15/mo and I'd be in heaven.
