T1

The condo I live in recently replaced the roadrunner business class connection we had here to a T1 hosted by Bellsouth. After being online with it for a few weeks now I notice that it doesn’t seem to be as fast as RR. The user load here is pretty light; I know I use the most bandwidth. I thought at many times the cost of a regular BB connection that it would be much faster. Why does a T1 cost so much?

A T1 can be used for other things besides data. I think it can be split up into 24 voice channels or any combination of voice/ data.

A T1 is dedicated service uptime. Its mainly for buisnesses that can't afford downtime. If the service goes down, its fixed within a tiny time frame. Its dedicated line that can be 24 voice channels, all data channels, or a combination of the two. Or work has a half T for voice and the other half for data. Its about 512kbps/512kbps where I work.

High tech comes to Mexican border protection

»news.yahoo.com/s/ap/2006 ··· ameras_8
The governor of Texas wants to turn all the world into a virtual posse. Rick Perry has announced a $5 million plan to install hundreds of night-vision cameras on private land along the Mexican border and put the live video on the Internet, so that anyone with a computer who spots illegal immigrants trying to slip across can report it on a toll-free hot line.

Under the plan, announced on the eve of the state GOP convention, cameras and other equipment would be supplied to willing landowners and placed along some of the most remote reaches of the border. The live video would be made available to law enforcement and anyone else with an Internet connection.

Viewers would be able to call day or night to report anything that looks like trespassing, drug smuggling or something else suspicious.
Looks like an internet version of reality TV. Maybe they will give out prizes if a call results in a capture. Sort of a new version of Texas Hold-Em.

Re: T1

A T1 is 1.5 mb/s up and downstream. Anything less is a fractional T1. It is a true circuit as opposed to packets.

Former DSL tech now Repair tech.

I passed safe pole climbing today in Westmont. Finally got that monkey off my back. Nothing like being forced to do something you weren't origially hired for. Thank you and have a nice day.

Re: T1

T1 has guarantees on the connection, and is dedicated, not shared (atleast not until it reaches the internet).

T1 was probably a poor choice for a condo/apartment, they could of found a business class from some other ISP and got more speed for less.

I believe I understand a little bit better now. The high cost is associated to the guarantee of constant uptime. Also the technology is different because of the way it handles data. Perhaps we got a good deal after all. Funny it seems that after I posted about the slow speed it seems to be flying now.

You are probably right there. That is what happens when you have people that think they know more then they do running the show. I tried to offer my help but they turned me down.

Appeals court backs Bush on wiretaps

»news.yahoo.com/s/ap/2006 ··· rt_fbi_9
A federal appeals court sided with the Bush administration Friday on an electronic surveillance issue, making it easier to tap into Internet phone calls and broadband transmissions.

The court ruled 2-1 in favor of the Federal Communications Commission, which says equipment using the new technologies must be able to accommodate police wiretaps under the 1994 Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act, known as CALEA.

Judge David Sentelle called the agency's reading of the law a reasonable interpretation.

FCC chairman Kevin Martin said the decision ensures that law enforcement's ability to conduct court-ordered electronic surveillance will keep pace with new technology.
Unless overturned by the Supreme Court, this ruling means that universities, ISP's, etc. must install wiretapping equipment at their own expense so that law enforcement(with a court order) can tap into VOIP, emails, IM's, etc, on internet connections.

You know, I don't see much of Verizon Voicewing on these threads. I know it's a small department and small VOIP service compared to Vonage and all of them. What are your guy's thoughts on it?

Personally as a rep for them. I'm frusterated we can't do more. According to what I've seen on BBR, we've got a really good tech support rating. Which is cool. But man we are getting more and more limited on what us inbound tech reps can do. I personally don't have the service. No internet, and no comp.

Xbox 360 Spring update

Xbox always worked since the day I got it in march, no problems, no freeze ups,

Took the new software update, and now my xbox freezes all the time.

Called Xbox Tech support, they can't do anything for me, but they said they will send me a box and replace my 3 month old xbox 360 with a brand new refurbished unit.

Anyone wanna buy a brand new used 1994 grand am.

Pi$$es me off so much. Figures, Every update from MS need and update.
