T1The condo I live in recently replaced the roadrunner business class connection we had here to a T1 hosted by Bellsouth. After being online with it for a few weeks now I notice that it doesnt seem to be as fast as RR. The user load here is pretty light; I know I use the most bandwidth. I thought at many times the cost of a regular BB connection that it would be much faster. Why does a T1 cost so much?

Re: T1said by SkullBot: Why does a T1 cost so much? A T1 can be used for other things besides data. I think it can be split up into 24 voice channels or any combination of voice/ data.

A T1 is dedicated service uptime. Its mainly for buisnesses that can't afford downtime. If the service goes down, its fixed within a tiny time frame. Its dedicated line that can be 24 voice channels, all data channels, or a combination of the two. Or work has a half T for voice and the other half for data. Its about 512kbps/512kbps where I work.

Re: T1A T1 is 1.5 mb/s up and downstream. Anything less is a fractional T1. It is a true circuit as opposed to packets.

Re: T1I believe I understand a little bit better now. The high cost is associated to the guarantee of constant uptime. Also the technology is different because of the way it handles data. Perhaps we got a good deal after all. Funny it seems that after I posted about the slow speed it seems to be flying now.

Re: T1As Vampire said in the post below, a T1 is not a shared circuit. You get a guaranteed 1.54/1.54 connection all the way out to BellSouth's backbone connection. It isn't as fast as cable, but you also aren't sharing your bandwidth with everyone in the neighborhood.
Still, that's a bit of overkill for a residential building. If they wanted something more reliable than cable, a business-class ADSL or SDSL account would've been a better, and cheaper, choice.

Re: T1Any T1 that has 24 - 56 or 64k voice channels on it, for example. Circuit switching was around a long time before packet switching. It is not based on an internet protocol. Dedicated ds0 tributaries.

T1 has guarantees on the connection, and is dedicated, not shared (atleast not until it reaches the internet).
T1 was probably a poor choice for a condo/apartment, they could of found a business class from some other ISP and got more speed for less.

High tech comes to Mexican border protection» news.yahoo.com/s/ap/2006 ··· ameras_8The governor of Texas wants to turn all the world into a virtual posse. Rick Perry has announced a $5 million plan to install hundreds of night-vision cameras on private land along the Mexican border and put the live video on the Internet, so that anyone with a computer who spots illegal immigrants trying to slip across can report it on a toll-free hot line.
Under the plan, announced on the eve of the state GOP convention, cameras and other equipment would be supplied to willing landowners and placed along some of the most remote reaches of the border. The live video would be made available to law enforcement and anyone else with an Internet connection.
Viewers would be able to call day or night to report anything that looks like trespassing, drug smuggling or something else suspicious. Looks like an internet version of reality TV. Maybe they will give out prizes if a call results in a capture. Sort of a new version of Texas Hold-Em.

Appeals court backs Bush on wiretaps» news.yahoo.com/s/ap/2006 ··· rt_fbi_9A federal appeals court sided with the Bush administration Friday on an electronic surveillance issue, making it easier to tap into Internet phone calls and broadband transmissions.
The court ruled 2-1 in favor of the Federal Communications Commission, which says equipment using the new technologies must be able to accommodate police wiretaps under the 1994 Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act, known as CALEA.
Judge David Sentelle called the agency's reading of the law a reasonable interpretation.
FCC chairman Kevin Martin said the decision ensures that law enforcement's ability to conduct court-ordered electronic surveillance will keep pace with new technology. Unless overturned by the Supreme Court, this ruling means that universities, ISP's, etc. must install wiretapping equipment at their own expense so that law enforcement(with a court order) can tap into VOIP, emails, IM's, etc, on internet connections.

VWYou know, I don't see much of Verizon Voicewing on these threads. I know it's a small department and small VOIP service compared to Vonage and all of them. What are your guy's thoughts on it?
Personally as a rep for them. I'm frusterated we can't do more. According to what I've seen on BBR, we've got a really good tech support rating. Which is cool. But man we are getting more and more limited on what us inbound tech reps can do. I personally don't have the service. No internet, and no comp.

Xbox 360 Spring updateXbox always worked since the day I got it in march, no problems, no freeze ups,
Took the new software update, and now my xbox freezes all the time.

UpdateUpdate on the BPL system in my hometown. It is now up and running at almost full capicity...they have one more watertower and building to outfit and they will be set. I tried a PC in their office that was connected to it that was setup for 1.5 and it got 1.6 both up and down. I may switch from comcast to the BPL just for the extra upload. Symetrical 3mbps sounds good to me . (packages are as follows 512kbps for 29,1.5mbps for 39, and 3mbps for 49). » www.lighthousebbd.com/It may just work. But I still miss my Shortwave...I listened to BBC direct from london.

National Franchise System could be a good thing for cableco! With a national franchise system put into place, the removal of local yahoos that might have typically prevented overlapping cable video providers could not be moved aside. This could mean a good thing for cowsumers if cable companies decide to fight and feast on intra-industry competitors.
Also, this could open the doors to a cable provider opening their network and wholesaling bandwidth-access to cowsumers for IPTV-based video services. Imagine Adelphia wholesaling prioritized access to its cowsumers so that anyone else (comcast, SBC, DirecTV) can sell Adelphia customers IPTV.
