Sweden proposes NSA-like phone/email monitoring

»news.yahoo.com/s/ap/2007 ··· spying_3
Sweden's government presented a contentious plan Thursday to allow a defense intelligence agency to monitor — without a court order — e-mail traffic and phone calls crossing the nation's borders.

The government insists only a fraction of the electronic communications will be affected, but critics worry the program, designed to combat terrorism and other threats to national security, is too far-reaching.

Their concerns resemble criticism of a U.S. surveillance program launched in 2001 that monitors international phone calls and e-mails to or from the United States involving people suspected by the government of having terrorist links.

The Swedish proposal, which needs parliamentary approval, would give the National Defence Radio Establishment a green-light to use so-called data mining software to search for sensitive keywords in all phone and e-mail communication passing through cables or wires across the country's borders.

Today, such traffic can only be monitored with court approval if police suspect a crime, although the agency is already free to spy on airborne signals, such as radio and satellite traffic.

European governments have gradually been expanding their surveillance powers, wiretapping rules and police search powers as part of efforts to unravel terror plots.
Looks like others are coming around to the knowledge that fighting terrorists needs similar tools.

Most of my traffic comes thru google, MSN, and Yahoo keyword searches. Only a small number comes from BBR postings.

Let's check back in 6 months to see where this goes.. Umm, nowhere. This is another right wing whack job attempt by the MINORITY party of the swedes to make some headlines. There is ZERO chance it will pass, as the swedes take their privacy VERY seriously.

He didn't at least not in that post. He cited a law that Karlmarx, in all his eurorific goodness, thought couldn't pass in Europe; cause the eu is the pinnacle of free society where rights aren't ever trampled or some such untrue nonsense.

Hmm, well, a friend of mine said something (kind of) along those lines but I thought it was funny at least - - -
"...well they brought Spock back in Star Trek III with the Genesis machine..." I about lost it laughing..

Either way, as long as they still have cool space cinema and some more battle, I'll be cool with such a sub-plot

Re: I can't believe

I think the writers have been making a serious mistake by getting away from what makes the series interesting: the paranoia over who is/isn't a cylon, and the constant fear of being chased through space by robotic freaks.

By making the Cylons this season a walking Benetton ad, they've managed to take a lot of the tension out of the series. There's also simply fewer space battles...

They need to go back and watch that "30 minutes" episode from the first season.

Re: I can't believe

yes indeed. agree 100% on all those points. too much drama will ruin a perfectly good work of sci-fi.

Also, they've only had the cylons say "by your command" once afaik... 2nd episode of the miniseries I think.

Actually, as the Galactican diaspora gets further and further away from the 13 colonies (and presumably Cylon space), it makes a great deal of sense that the attacks would taper off. After all, the further away they get, the harder it is, logistically, for the Cylons to keep attacking them.

Wasn't it "33" (maybe the writers were "old latrobe" fans)?

Re: I can't believe

I think the question is how 'far' can they jump. I mean, if they can jump from anywhere to anywhere, then no, logistically the cylons should still be attacking constantly. But watching the show, it appears the distance they can jump is quite limited. Which would explain the lack of cylons later in the series..

Word is that the 4th season will be the last season, and they DON'T get to earth, the cylons wipe out humanity.. ouch..

Well, they wipe out the second diaspora. Cool whether they wipe out just the 12 colonies or manage to wipe out all of humanity. Gotta love story lines that take the "bummer ending" approach.

Wrestling fans rejoice; videos on Cingular

»news.yahoo.com/s/nm/2007 ··· ing_dc_1
The top U.S. mobile service provider, owned by AT&T Inc., plans to announce an agreement with World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. on Thursday to sell everything from ringtones with famous wrestlers' voices to graphics and videos, including weekly matches and the annual spring tournament.

Some World Wrestling videos will be available as part of Cingular's $19.99 a month media service plan and the company will also sell a premium video package for $4.99 a month featuring highlights from WrestleMania and other shows.

Cingular, which is being rebranded as AT&T, will also sell related ringtones for $2.49 each and graphics for $1.99.

He believes enough of Cingular's 61 million customers are wrestling fans "that this will do very well."

But WWE's 15 million weekly viewers are the ones who will ultimately decide if the phone screen can deliver a clear enough image of favorite super stars like Hacksaw Jim Duggan or his curvaceous female counterparts.
There is no stopping the WWE. I just hope their fans aren't watching wrestling on their cell phones while driving. They are crazy enough already.

Re: Wrestling fans rejoice; videos on Cingular

I like to see people who really enjoy things, but one thing that I never understood was the whole WWF, WCW, WWE, etc. Never could get into it, but "x" million people can't be wrong I guess.

As for the videos on the cell phone, eeeh, I just want a phone that has a good battery and a decent speakerphone.

Re: F_ing Virus

I spent the past week doing DST updates between workstations, servers, handhelds, exchange...I'm fairly surprised I didn't have to update the fan's in the rack, the internet tubes, and the whole deal after all this bullshat.

Don't bother with Exchange's rebasing tool. Complete waste of time when you have folks in so many diff time zones! And coming out of 5.5 seems to leave a nasty stain of broken timezone settings, or something.

Needless to say, our users are going to have one hell of a Monday. At least we gave them fair warning. In all honesty it was for the greater good, as the log results from pre-flight looked worse than the initial problem.

I hate "giving up", but this was hopeless. Now that we've moving forward, I'll just need to be sure everyone has correct timezone stamps occuring and fix those that do not for the next time some idiot thinks we need DST 3 weeks earlier.

Fiber internet.

Looks like they want fiber to the home as a standard for America.

I hope they make this a Law so it gets done.

I also hope Canada has something similar.

Whatever happened to that tcp/ip protocol successor that speed up the internet a bajillion times ?

Then they need to become more aggressive in their installation of the fiber. We see all the FIOS commercials in NYC and elsewhere I am sure, it is not available in my area to purchase. It will probably be a long time before it reaches me as it is not available in NYC at all that I know of.

Windows Vista....hmmm Not Bad or Good!

Well, at my technical school I managed to get about an hour ussage of a comptuer with Windows Vista installed on it (without any additional crap software included). It was the bussiness version. Unfortunetly I didn't get too experience aero as it was a custom built PC built by the one of the schools' computer techs and the graphics card didn't have enough memory to support it. None the less, the system was fast and full of new features while missing some of the old features that were included with Windows XP. Nothing too big but plenty of eye candy to admire and many bugs to fix. For now I give it 3 out of 5 stars. Not bad Microsoft....not bad at all, just have to kick out those bugs out on the street faster. Although my Windows Vista experience was good for the time I had to use it, I still consider Windows XP a better choice for most users at this point in time, at least until all the bugs get worked out. Hey, I'm still running on Windows XP SP1a with no updates installed what so ever and it runs perfectly fine on a computer with a Pentium 4 2.52 GHz processor with 1 GB of RAM (2 Sticks of 512 MB), so I'm good.

A Joke By Any Other Name

Two things for my fellow Friday Open Threaders:

1. I'm still clueless at my job and at this point, I'm happy to just sit back and let them pay me. Let them deal with it.

2. Re: The Bronx Fire - As someone who lives near where the tragedy occurred, can we stop saying "The Bronx 'community' mourns?" Community? Where? Not only is this area not a community, but on top of having to look over your shoulder every two seconds for safety concerns, any attempt at a communal gathering is helplessly useless.

Back to the shootouts next week.

Boston's (The Band) Brad Delp R.I.P

ATKINSON, N.H. -- Brad Delp, the lead singer for the band Boston, was found dead Friday in his home in southern New Hampshire. He was 55.

Atkinson police responded to a call for help at 1:20 p.m. and found Delp dead. Lt. William Baldwin said in a news release that there was no indication of foul play.

"There was nothing disrupted in the house. He was a fairly healthy person from what we're able to ascertain," Police Chief Philip Consentino told WMUR-TV.

Delp apparently was alone at the time, Baldwin said.

The cause of death remained under investigation. Police said an incident report would not be available until Monday.

Delp sang on Boston's 1976 hits "More than a Feeling" and "Long Time." He also sang on Boston's most recent album, "Corporate America," released in 2002.

He joined the band in the early 1970s after meeting Tom Scholz, an MIT student interested in experimental methods of recording music, according to the group's official Web site. The band enjoyed its greatest success and influence during its first decade.

The band's last appearance was in November 2006 at Boston's Symphony Hall.

On Friday night, the Web site was taken down and replaced with the statement: "We just lost the nicest guy in rock and roll."

A call to the Swampscott, Mass., home of Boston guitarist Barry Goudreau was not immediately returned Friday night.

Wow you want to criticize one of the few posters in the News section who contributes "on-topic" (whether you agree with him or not) as doing so simply to drum up blog traffic?

Interesting..

Emptying my head now..

Why does the BBR news section continually post slanted RIAA "news" when, invariably, these threads simply turn into nonsensical, off-topic, rant 'n flame fests?

There's no question that RIAA is the fav whipping post of the Entitled generation, but seriously, these "news" threads are just a popular place to repeat the same posts seen years ago.. i.e. "fuck RIAA blah blah."

Rant rant rant.

But theses threads are popular, no? Are they just to drum up posting traffic on the News threads?
