johnaec posted : Well, I went to the 2Wire site and they appear to have all the HomePortals listed except the 1000HW that SBC gave me. I'll play around with a few more things. I can get into the HP configuration, so I can probably set it up to at least assign a static IP for the computer. It's more of an annoyance than anything, and I'm not going to spend hours tracking down something really elusive...

Thanks - John

anon posted : try putting a static ip on your network card if you think its causing your hang up...i doubt it but its worth a try...your ip thru 2wire is a range of 172.16.0.x i believe...but maybe your pc is crashed so bad that it causes the ethernet card to hang making the network link lite on your 2wire to go out...

gdm posted : The dynamic IP changing should be completely transparent to you especially using a router/modem.

I don't know enough about 2wires but I would make sure you have the latest firmware and maybe post in the 2wire forum.

Dynamic IP killing computer?

johnaec posted : At my old location I had SBC DSL with a static IP but have moved to a new location where I now have a dynamic IP with SBC DSL.

Performance has been fine, (on Expert), but on average every 2-3 days my computer will simply freeze up - I can't even ctrl-alt-delete out, and have to hit the computer reset button. I notice when it's frozen that the bottom light on the 2Wire Homelink is also out, showing that the DSL connection has been lost.

Is it the dynamic IP lease renewal/update that's causing this? My old static IP connection could be left on for weeks with no problems at all, but my new connection freezes like clockwork every 2-3 days if the computer is left on.

Any ideas?

Thanks - John
