Changing the conditions after the fact does suck but even the new terms say that if you cancel within the first 30 days they will waive the disconnect fee and refund the activation fee so at least that is good:

"Primus refunds the activation fee, first month of service and waives the disconnect fee"

I wonder if anyone saved a copy of the terms before they changed them. I tried the wayback machine but apparently it wasn't archived (looks like "lingo.com" was previously owned by someone else though)

I guess I got lucky, then. I was about to call them to cancel when *they* called *me* -- they'd botched my CC# and the rep wanted me to give it to him again. I just said, "I was wanting to cancel anyway," -- he kinda *had* to let me go at that point, as he had no way to charge me!

BTW, the rep I spoke to when I first called indicated there was no "grace period" other than the 3mo free trial, and that I'd be out the activation fee if I cancelled. The 2nd time I called the rep said I had 30 days to cancel, and if I returned the DTA I'd get a "full refund" of my activation fee... that's when I ordered the service.

Still a lot of confusion over at Lingo, I'd say.

Everyone there gives you a different story!! Outsourcing is OK, but they have to make sure what these people are doing!!
I dont care if they are in India or anywhere, but they have to be able to communicate clearly.
I am really tired to of trying to figure out which story I should believe in and which part of the story I should believe in.

I called Customer Service after placing my order online, to complain about the charge, they told me the same thing they told everybody else on this forum, so I requested to speak to a supervisor. At that time I was transferred to a representative in VA. I discussed the matter with him, and he told me he would adjust the account, he also gave me his direct line and e-mail address. I suggest to all of you who have been subject to false and misleading statements on Lingo's webpage, to call back customer service and demand to speak to a manager. It's not only uncool to make you pay for something they advertise as being for free, it's also against the law.

Err, why would you be charged for moving - what does moving have to do with VOIP service? You can take the ATA with you when you move, its location indepedent.

Are you saying you can't change your phone number to a different area without cancelling and then restarting service? That would be bizarre.

Just ordered mine over the website, then got to the 5th stage of applying, and hit continue......

The webserver said ERROR, cannot find the next page....lol

So I called them, was very nice to hear a real person answer the phone. Even if they were heavy Indian accent, they transferred me to TS in Va...

As we were talking I said, just for grins and giggles, let me try to use the userid and password I created when i applied.

Well, wouldn't you know it worked, my account was built out, and it showed that they were in process...

WOW, what customer service, and what a well built website..

Packet 8, your going to be history...

I am also going to kill my Packet8 service if Lingo works out.
Two reasons:
1. Number portablity
2. Some sort of emergency calling

Re: Lingo VOIP- $19.95 unlimited US, Canada, Western E

I have used Primus in the past for regular long distance. I was very happy with their service and rates at the time. I hope this service lives up to my expectations.

I expect some changes to their service and agreements as they just started up and have to work the bugs out for their business model. One thing they will have to remember is that they have to do it right to stay in the market with so many companies providing VOIP service. Packet8 had the same response after changing their terms and conditions which they felt an upsurge in complaints but they did it after being in the VOIP business for a while. I think it is smart of Lingo to work out the problems in the first week of announcing their service and hopefully will stick with the original terms for those who signed up early.

It looks exactly the same. A company like Cisco must be offering a corporate VOIP package. Probably includes the ATA, routers and software.

This actually make me feel a whole lot better about signing up with their service. They must have a good manufacture behind them.

Re: Lingo VOIP- $19.95 unlimited US, Canada, Weste

OK, guys I just called to cancel my order( i hope its indeed cancelled).
Talked to a rep in India, and the guy said I would be charged for 40 bucks even if I cancel now!--come on! it's not even shipped yet.. This is really outrageous!!!

Then I asked for a manager and they pused me to another indian rep who poises as a supervisor. (reminding me of used car dealership)

The answer is the same: they are not waiving the activation or shipping. Watch your credit cards, fellows...

Now this "supervisor" promised he would send a cancel ticket, and there wont be any charge to me, but no cancellation confirmation can be given. Keep long story short, it's really frustrating. and I will have to call back tomorrow to make sure they indeed have cancelled my order..

P-lie-msux or limbo, whatever, I will never spend another dime on them.

Re: Warning: Hidden fees $39.95

Laserjobs,

You keep saying that you will cancel Packet8 because of "number portability." Although it's not official, Packet8 *will* try to port your number if you ask them (they haven't updated their FAQ in this regard...it's probably still "beta" but it's been this way for at least a couple months).

And no, if Lingo doesn't have any rate centers in your area, they will not be able to port your number. The rep that someone talked to who indicated that this could be done can't even read their own web pages and literature, apparently:

"Can I keep my current phone number if I sign up for Lingo?
Yes. If Lingo's network is covered in your area, we can port your existing phone number to our service. (Available in the U.S. only)"

That's right: "if Lingo's network is covered in your area."

I realize that every CSR tells a different story, but when I checked with Vonage's web-site and input the first six digits of my home number and it kicked-out a "Sorry your telephone number cannot be ported to our service" or words to that effect..so Vonage was out for me.. Packet8 gave a list of cities within my state (MD) and my city wasn't on their list of rate-areas so Packet8 was out.. Lingo/Primus had no way to input your existing number and check for portability and did not have a list of local rate centers so I called their customer support number and spoke to an Indian gentleman who said that when you sign-up the sign-up process asks if you want your number ported and then does an internal check..he assured me that it would tell me if it could not be done and kick me out of the sign-up process.. I called again and a second female (Indian?) CSR told me that "well we try to work with your local telco as best we can to port your number, but there is no guarantee that they will do the port, but we do try; if they do not port the number, you will be notified by e-mail and at that time can cancel at no charge.."

Anyway, that just my two-cents..

Re: Lingo VOIP- $19.95 unlimited US, Canada, Western E

I just got Lngo yesterday.

Ordered on monday got the box on tuesday !

Calls are just incredible (I had vonage before). I had a few friends at home, I made them find which ones was verizon or Lingo (calling log distance), they could not tell. Th people I call cannot tell either.

I cancelled verizon when I got Vonage, Verizon is comming up with its own offer soon, but dougth that any one will be able to match Lingo's price, and since teh quality is perfect...bye bye P8 and maybe Vonage

The service is great, I called europe and Brazil, it is the same good quality.

The web portal looks very proffessional, it is much more than what I need.

The only problem is that the customer service told me that I cannot port my number now, I shoudl have asked for it when I ordered Lingo, that sucks...

Re: Lingo VOIP - customer service

Just a tradeoff between price and quality. They can't offer a low price like that and pay high American salaries to everyone. You are certainly free to take your business elsewhere and possibly pay more money so that you can talk to Americans on their support lines. People that don't care as much can sign up with Lingo, pay less, but then talk to India. Choice doesn't seem like a problem to me.

One thing is obvious, the price of VOIP is heading to zero. It will be interesting to see how close it will get and if it can hold there for long.

When Linksys starts bundling VOIP capability into their standard routers, then it will get interesting because the service providers won't have to ship hardware. Hopefully Linksys won't used a closed protocol in a short sited attempt to gain VOIP market share since they are a hardware company, not a phone company.

Given the limited bandwidth used by voice, I potentially could resell VOIP service from my home using my 5 mbs cable modem connection. I could provide in home tech support to get it setup in my neighborhood. I wonder how many lines I could support with one connection.
