Capu.net Hands Residential DSL over to Earthlink → Re: THIS BLOWS!!!!!!

I've been paying at least $79/mo since '99.

Calls to tech support -- maybe 10.

Bandwith usage (didn't have a CS server runnng for a long time) so it was pretty negligable. I mean I wasn't uploading/downloading 24/7.

If I was paying $39/49 mo. I could see how they'd lose money if the lease for my line cost them like $30/mo.

I was paying $50/month for 384/384 SDSL (cough, I mean 384/128 ADSL which is what the claimed they were selling when I got it)

Do they really pay $30/month for the line - how can that be, Verizon will give you a new phone line with dial-tone for much less than that per month - doesn't Verizon have to offer Capunet copper at their true cost?

I don't know what Verizon charges Covad/Capunet.
Even if they charged the "true" cost, I wonder what the real true cost is.

You'd have to dig through all the tariffs on file with the PUC in your state to see what the copper costs, but I can tell you for certain that Capu.net is paying Covad at least $39 for Telesurfer and $49 for Telesurfer Pro. Quite likely more if they didn't hit their contracted numbers yet. Add to that $10+ dollars if they are paying Covad to backhaul your circuit from one area to another (ie: you are in NJ, covad backhauls traffic to DC for capu.net because they don't have an NJ POP). And then there's $4500/month per T3 into Covad...

It's all alot less profitable than dialup is because there are so many people with their hands in it...
