anon posted : Maybe I am the only one that wants this but I want a router that offers Dual Wan, IPsec VPN Server for regular use and also PPTP VPN Server(for the occasional emergency where all I need is to find a box running XP and I can get on our network). You can get PPTP Server on some cheep single WAN routers but the minute you get into dual WAN it is all IPsec which makes some sense due to the security issues with PPTP. Most of the dual Wan products out there:

GnatBox - NO PPTP
Symantec VPN 200
Nexland Pro800 - NOW Symantec
BroDigit NFR3024
Hawking FR24 - NO VPN
Xincom XC-DPG402 - NO PPTP
Xincom XC-DPG502
Xincom XC-DPG602
HotBrick Firewall VPN 600/2 - NO PPTP
HotBrick Firewall VPN 1200/2 - NO PPTP
ZyXel ZyWall 35/70 - NO PPTP
Linksys RV082 - NO PPTP
Edimax BR-6104K/5524 - NO VPN
Pheenet BIG-02/4
Zero One Technology AF420b - NO VPN
Xterasys XR-4106
Ovislink MH-200 - SAME as Xterasys
Longshine LCS-883R-DSL-2W
TRENDware/Trendnet
CyberGuard/Snapgear - PPTP, IPsec
Juniper/Netscreen
Linksys/Cisco RV082 - NO PPTP
FatPipe Networks - NO PPTP
Sonicwall TZ 170 - NO PPTP

It seems the only two that will do both is the CyberGuard/SnapGear and the Xterasys. Our VPN needs are just a few users so we don't need a higher end device so I gave the Xterasys a go. The CyberGuard would meet our needs well from playing with the online emulator they have.

Xterasys seems to be a generic OEM company and the same router is sold as the Ovislink MH-200. It is built using waveplus.com's RISC OEM chip set. It is as generic as you get, no company name in the manual, the GUI or the box and Xterasys's name is just a sticker on the box. So any future support or firmware upgrades you may never get but for $140 the box is very impressive in features for a small office solution and it works well. The bandwidth sharing was much better than what we experienced with the Linksys RV082. There are some nice bandwidth analysis features.

LoneRegister posted : I have the RV042 from Linksys - and it works - kinda.

You can set it up for Auto Load balancing, or "manual" load balancing. However, what it does in manual mode is detects the speed of the primary connection. Then, when a certain percentage of that speed is exceeded, it will switch completely over to the 2nd connection. All traffic goes on that connection from that point on, until the "switchover" time expires.

So - no load balancing as we know it. Just switching over to a 2nd connection under certain circumstances.

Auto Load balancing appears to switch between the two randomly. Which is kinda ok and kinda not ok.

In my situation, I want the network to go over connection 1 always, except for when I talk to IP range X and Y.

No problem I think - I'll setup some static routes. Well - static routes ONLY work (again kinda) when DHCP is turned OFF.

And then I find that the router get's stuck sometimes on one or the other WAN port. Randomly it appears.

Even though I have static routing input for what I want - it appears to ignore that at times.

So - does it work ? Kinda.

My favorite situation is when I am starting a download - it get's about 300k of a portion of it, and then hangs the download. I think because it wants to switch the download in the middle to the other WAN. This happens randomly - and you can get the download running by attempting it several times. But it's a pain in the butt.

Anyone else have experience with the Linksys RV series?

Freezone posted : SPending 1000k for a router defeats my need. I need more bandwidth cheap. At $800 more for a router that is an additional year of service. I would rather get a cheaper router and add a 4th line. I have 3 now 2dsl 1 cable. Now if I was some IT guy at a small to midsize, I would consider the 1k router. But keep in mind that the nexland pro800 turbo became a 1k router and that was just one big rip off.

Did Xincom over state their routers' future capability? Probably. Did they mis-understand the limitations of routers re aggregation? Maybe. Is a $200 Xincom capable of doing what some dual-WAN users need well enough to not have to pay much bigger bucks for a Zyxel? Most likely. Is the Xincom up-time reliability better than my Hawking? I would hope so. Does one get better service at the $1k price point than the $0.2k price point? You betcha. Will a 502 do what I need? That may require my buying one to find out.

kirby

Kirby Smith posted : Noted by Freezone

'"The bad news: There is no way to route SMTP traffic to one WAN link. "'

If this is not possible on the latest Hawking router, they took a step backwards. On the FR24, one can establish a mode of sharing where traffic can be routed by IP and port. Unfortunately, in that mode there is no percentage sharing or threshold sharing. What is wanted is both load balancing and tailored connections, e.g., SMTP.

As for the Xincom 502: I looked at their user manual yesterday. For a router that lists for $300., one would expect a manual larger than 47 pages. The Zexel Z70 has a 600 page manual, so based on cost Xincom should provide about 200 pages. :) More seriously, Xincom should eliminate ambiguity by better explaining some menus, showing all subfunction menus with examples, and cleaning up broken English in the latter portion of the text.

Zexel seems to have taken the position that this is complicated stuff, so we'll try to explain it as well as we can, while Xincom seems to have taken the position that this is complicated stuff, so it is best left to a networking guru who can devine what we intended by our menus.

kirby

Users on the nexland forum had to help them understand their own product and after making us beta and getting a stable firmware they sold to symantec.
circuitsam posted : I'm currently using a Xincom DPG402 dual wan router with Qwest DSL and Cableone cable. I got everything up and running. When I run speed tests my upload speed on the cable wan link is severely hampered. I'm getting 2k, and used to get 128k. Any thoughts as to why this is happening? If I disconnect or disable the DSL everything is fine. I have tried configuring the Xincom router on the same subnet as well as a different subnet as the DSL router. I have assigned the DSL interface on the Xincom router a static IP address (192.168.0.5) that is on the same subnet as the default address of the near side interface of the actiontec GT701-WG DSL router (192.168.0.1) default subnet mask of course being 255.255.255.0 for both interfaces. I'm able to connect to websites and download fine from both WAN interfaces. My only problem is my upload speed when the router appears to be utilizing WAN interface 1 which is the cable provider. Any thoughts or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Sam

Kirby Smith posted : The Hawking FR24 (now sold refurbished by Hawking) has a sharing mode using rules, allowing routing by source IP [range], destination IP [range], and port [range]. Any activity not corresponding to a rule goes out WAN1, unless WAN1 is unavailable, in which case the router uses WAN2, and vice versa. As soon as I get time I plan to test Thunderbird with two SMTP and POP3 address pairs, each routed within Verizon or GWI networks.

Unfortunately, the Hawking seems to have some problem in my context where after 10 to 20 hours it goes incommunicado and has to be repowered. I caught it this morning communicado, but slow and apparently* not following the rules. Repowering fixed it. With the endless possibilities for ADSL modem and DSLAM disturbances, and ISP hacking countermeasures that may not be compatible with the router's methods of testing connectivity, it is hard to pin the blame on the Hawking with certainty,** but when this situation gets sufficiently tiresome, I will have to move higher on the router food chain. Too bad Anav's Z35 solution is 10 times the cost of the Hawking, and three times the cost of the Xincom 502.

kirby
_____________
*Or, it could have resulted from one ISP's connection being down for a while or ADSL modem retraining.

** My GWI connection would also break my Nexland ISB SOHO [single WAN] router after a while (or whenever GWI support tried to improve my connection), requiring reloading the firmware(!). My tentative suspicion is that these older routers do not allow for some type of recently adopted message type or format, and develop memory leaks when exposed to them. My SOHO ran tirelessly for years on Verizon PPPoE, but other owners reported problems whenever their cable company changed the interface.

I've gone through all the setup menus, and even called Linksys support. No, it doesn't exist, and it's not planned in the next firmware upgrade.
