Re: Tweaks Don't stick

After changing registry rwin settings, and adjusting mtu to automatic, reboot, retested speed, all was ok, and working great for a week. Settings checked again a week later, and "old" settings returned,as if the changes were never made (MTU too small, Rwin 4600 too low)
Anyone have any ideas why old settings returned?????
Thanks

The only way that could occur would be if another program reset the values OR, for some reason, Windows restored an older registry backup because an error was found during a registry scan. I would guess the latter.

I think AthlonIII got it on his second theory. Did you install any new hard/software since making settings? If so, the registry may have gotten out of kilter - Windows will automatically restore to the last known good state.
Retweak and test, when you have it right- backup your registry.

I cast my vote for the restored directory theory - I've had similar things happen on my system(s), usually right after/between messing with new software or hardware. How far back in time you travel depends on how long between boots - Windows makes a new copy of 'last known good status' at each successful boot. Long time between boots with a lot of changes not requiring reboot can set you back to your caveman days!:)

I should add that NetZero Dialer version 3.x is known to mess with RWIN.

Thank you for the replys...I downloaded and installed netscape 4.75 (update from 4.72) then discovered the reset.
I was able to get things re-tweaked, back to where they
"belong". I won't be using the Netscape browser anyway, (I just wanted to have the update)it seems Netscape takes considerably longer to load web pages, than IE 5.5

Netzero, Netscape's download whatever, and Real download will change the RWIN
I have seen this happen to many people's computers. I tell them to uninstall them and get another service.

Imagine if all applications start tweaking this without regard to the connection type. Yes, it is a crime!

Application programs should not mess with TCP/IP settings without telling users. If they make such change available it should be via a dialog. The changes they are doing is based on dial-up tweaks (which I really think that they don't help dial-up much either!)
