Re: Windows Update V5

Was that time in dial-up or high speed?

The original SP2 was (if I recall correctly) around 256 MB, and was the first one I installed. It took about 30 minutes to download on DSL.

On April 18, it took 2½ hours to download TWO critical updates. I was not a happy camper that day.

The entire SP2 RC2 that I re-installed last week was just about 98 MB, and took 28 minutes to download (on DSL). The entire setup (download, install, reboot, go back for recommended updates, install, reboot, etc...) took a little over an hour, and went smoothly.

However, I am going to wait for an updated Security CD from MS before installing the final release.

Yeah, i was able to do that about a day ago. Its not the same v.4 though that one normally uses.
Its the windows catalog v4 version. It does not scan your comp but gives you lists of all critical updates for your OS.

Deleting WUWEB.DLL worked for me in reverting back to V4 from V5.

Thanks, that worked.

Hi

Is Windows Update V5 final yet, or is it still in beta? Installed it other morning, but then it didn't find the IE Culumative update, so used system restore to get back to Windows Update Version 4, (My Windows update link is not forcing me to V5 yet)

Thanks

Is this something you have to install yourself? On my wifes PC, windows update is the new version 5. On my PC, its still the older version. Both systems are set up for windows update to notify about updates, and not automatically install them.

I'm glad I noticed this thread. I have Windows Update 5 but do not have SP2. I have no history in Ver 5 (except what I have installed from ver5 since I have had it for several weeks). Until day before yesterday, I could switch between version 4 and 5 and version 4 was the accurate version. Version 4 told me to reinstall several failing major critical updates. I confirmed they were failing using Belarc Advisor,Qfecheck and Microsoft Baseline Security Analyser (the best of the three). WU 5 did not offer me these failing updates. I also confirmed they had failed by doing file version checks. After I reinstalled them from ver4, I ran ver5 and they did not show up in my history! Ugh. Then I checked ver4 history to learn that I had none. The critical patches I had just installed from ver. 4 did not show in its history nor was anything else in ver. 4 history. Ver.5 has only the history of updates that I have done from it.

This is such a mess! I don't trust ver.5 at all. I'd like to go back to ver.4. Two days ago, when I tried to use ver.4 I got automatically redirected to ver5 and it no longer would work. I just got that problem fixed after using MS online WU tech support. But I still have no history and I should since I don't have SP2. I guess the switching back and forth between the two versions did something to my history? I have no iuhist.xml file in the WU ver4 folder so I guess something I don't have couldn't have gotten overwritten by switching between the two versions of WU.

I have no folder for version 5 so where the heck is the history for it and where are the controls located?

I can't go to V5 at all! WHY?

You guys don't want to go to the V5 Page, I do have sp2 and can't go to it... And don't know what. I installed the stuff for it about a week ago or so when someone posted a thread saying that there was a new WU page. That day I could go to the page, the next day it was back to V4. Then on the 9th I installed SP2 thinking that would fix it, because I read that Sp2 uses the new V5 page..
But now I still can't go to the V5 page, I can type it in manually and it takes me to the V4 page. The other day when I couldn't get to the V5 page, the v4 page said that I needed to download the active X stuff for the V4 page to work.. So eventually I had to do it.. cause I couldn't go to the V5 page anyway. When I went to install them it said that there was already a newer version installed and asked if i wanted to overwrite them. I didn't want to do it, but I finally had to, cause I couldn't get to the V5 page. Can someone please help me out? I have been trying to figure this out for 3 or 4 days. Thanx
