How do we access our webspace?

I have Charter in LA, CA and I have been trying to find my webspace. Don't we get a free email account, as well as a small personal webspace where we get to make a homepage?

Anyways, I tried the charter site, and all I found was that "My web page" is a page to pay bills and change account information.

Does anybody know how to access it? (do we even have one?)

Easy. With every webmail account you have yourself a free webspace.

You can use any ftp program (I use SmartFTP myself)...or internet explorer:

»ftp://username:password@webpag ··· rter.net

Your website is visible at

»webpages.charter.net/username

Also remember, if you make an email account, wait at least a couple of hours before your FTP account is created.

Alright, I got to the first link's prompt, and it seems my password/account doesn't work.

Is there some sort of way to register for it? I already registered for my email/webaccount using my account number last night.

Yep, there isn't any way to work with your web site from within the Charter web site where you were shown to go. That's for deleting and adding them. Idea is to work with your personal webspace, which is automatically (supposed to be anyway) given to you when you have an account with Charter, by using a FTP program. Of which, IE is one itself.
Here's Charter's instructions for using your webspace:

Instructions for Uploading Files to Your Webspace using Internet Explorer
Step 1: Open your browser and type in »ftp://webpages.charter.net. Click enter.
Step 2: Enter your username and password in the dialog box. Click 'login'.
Step 3: Open the folder on the hard disk where your files are located.
Step 4: Position the folder window so you can see both it and the Internet Explorer window.
Step 5: Drag and drop the files from the folder window to Internet Explorer to upload them.
Step 6: View your webpage by going to »webpages.charter.net/"username" (w/o quotes).

As you were told before, any FTP program can be used but Internet Explorer can be used as well. Although, I'm not certain if you must have version 6.
Hope that finally answers your question.
Oh, and if you're protecting your PC enough you might like to 'Add' the FTP address to Favorites (in menu of IE) so you don't need to login every time. I know mine works fine that way, but I recall plenty of trouble before I told it to save the login password or something.

Thanks omnitachyon...

I have one problem. I'm able to come up to the username//password prompt, but it says my username//pass is wrong.

I can log into the email//webaccount page easily, but the same login//pass doesn't work for the Webspace. I am sure I've typed it correctly and checked my caps lock.

So the password to this section is different?

Well, I have four different ID's/PW's for that Charter stuff, with one outdated though (old 1-way dialup+cable).

Looking at my FTP login here I can tell the number of characters (*******) for it matches to my original e-mail login. I've just forgotten it, although it is written down here, since putting that into Favorites; so, I never actually login anymore. My other ID's/PW's say they are for "payments" and "account" (My Account).

So my guess is that you probably are using your managing ID/PW and you'll need to use your e-mail ones instead. I hesitate to say ask a Charter rep. to help since once I did and ended up with another webspace name I didn't want.
Was some confusion over the older 1-way phone+cable account that moved to 2-way cable-only.

I'm looking at that "manage" login web page again to see what it says. I suppose you already registered...? Thing is, see, my PW's are different for that and FTP. If all else fails you could call them and maybe get the ID/PW straightened out. Pretty sure it's going to be for email+webspace together.

Needless to say, ID's/PW's are a large part of my life the past decade or so. And a part I don't like much.

Sheesh! So sorry. I reread what you wrote and I replied! Obviously I got confused while I thought it over what could be wrong.

You're only hope is probably going to be to call in to Charter and get someone to be sure your webspace is active and you can login with the ID/PW you have (or get a temporary). Just be sure they don't add more webspaces and can give you instructions on how to change your password if they give you a temp.

Again, sorry for my relentlessly awful short-term memory!

what would be an easy web page creator to use for getting a web page look? if upload files they just sit on a page in a directory. I would really like it to be a web page.

Your problem might be that your default file name is wrong. Your "main" web page should be in a file named index.html (I think it's case sensitive).

That way, when you browse to webpages.charter.net/yourwebsite, it automatically comes up (substituting "yourwebsite" with the ID you created when you setup the Web page space with Charter).

There are many, so you might get a lot of suggestions.

You'll likely want something free, since just starting web page creation.

Fact is, anything that deals with text could be used. Windows' Notepad is one. But you'd need to learn HTML. You probably don't want to write HTML, anyway, so that kind is out.
WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) is the most likely thing then, making a web page easy for the novice to work with because it shows you the web page while you create it.

Some example (free to use) programs:
»www.trellian.com/webpage ··· load.htm
»www.mcwebsoftware.com/wwez/

Be aware that I'm not recommending any one particular program.

I keep getting error message saying no socket connected. I'm using Smartftp. Is the server down? Last time I used ftp, it worked, but that's been awhile. Is this the correct format for a ftp address?

MVM,

You probably know this but just in case... There should be a colon between your username and password.

ftp://username:password@webpages.charter.net
