osme posted : Them looking at both marks doesn't help you much, because any way you look at it, repeating a course isn't good. However, I don't think very many universities penalize you for it, but Waterloo does. I've heard that they take 3% or something off the repeated mark. In my opinion this is appropriate, because even if you failed the course the first time around, the second time through, you will recognize some of the material and it will come to you more easily than other students.
--
StephenHarperSaid.caLiberal.ca

ontario, highschool repeat course

nova220 posted : Hi there

Today I finsished three weeks of summer school, of English ENG4U. I got a 77%. Now, not that this is a completely horrendus mark, It is far lower than I need for engineering, although I could even it out with other subjects. I know what I did to get this mark etc, but I won't go into details here, in short I think I can get much better at my normal day school. My english mark the last two years was around 90%, not that I expect to get that high again, and not to say that my teachers just pour marks out... Ok that's just background so it gives you insight, but no need to comment on it because I'm not going to explain in detail everything, just believe (as I hope) I can get a higher mark.

My actual question is... if I do repeat and say get an 85-90 on my second attempt that the course, knowing that the mark will show up in the Ontario School Transcript... what do you think Universities will think of it? It is wise to take the course again (i'm fairly sure it is)? or would I be penlazied too much for having a repeated course on the transcript. I'm considering Universities like Waterloo, UofT and Queens...

Thanks for your opinion.
My conjecture is that, they will look at both marks, look at my past marks and hopefully decide that it was just one school/teacher etc. since the course material should be the same.
