They transferred me to someone else who asked why I was cancelling my service. I told him I wasn't paying an extra $10/mo, raising my rate to over $60/mo, when they were offering new customers a deal of $25.99/mo with a free modem lease. He ended up giving me the special price until the end of December. We'll see what happens after that. One side point though - those speeds are definitely achievable, so if nothing else, cable companies better uncap the bandwidth or at least loosen the noose some.

I've heard in this thread alone some folks who say that they're able to get at least 512/up service (dsl or cable i think) for what we're about to be paying, so I guess I just don't understand why they don't give the customers a little more value for the extra raping we're about to get?

You are getting a thinly disguised 25% price increase. Have you ever seen a 25% annual pay raise? Or a 25% yearly increase in the price of a car that hasn't improved in three years? Charter can call it what they want, customers know better.

I recall reading somewhere that Charter lost about $400M last quarter, so clearly they have to do something. I still firmly believe their intention is to reduce the customer base with this substantial rate increase.

Landline phone service providers are beginning to lose customers who have awakened to the fact that cellphones are cheaper. This may help cable companies. However, cable TV is going the way of the dodo bird. The profits in internet service alone may not be enough to keep them afloat.

Do you know this for a fact? I know they have offered some interesting packages to some of the early adopters, but I haven't heard they lowered their top tier $199 package to $39. I seriously doubt that.

However, maybe they figured most people won't suck up anywhere near that bandwidth so what the heck. IMO, Charter probably can't afford to charge as much as they're about to start charging. There are too many other companies that give better service levels for the same or less money. In the long run, it's going to cost them more money due to lost customers versus the 10/month they'd be losing if they were to keep prices the same.

I'd certainly be on the DSL wagon if I could get it with out being forced to carry phone service through the company as well. I think the $40 price range is just fine to pay for the highest level of home service. In fact, I know in Keller Tx Verizon is running a test and are offering Fiber to the homes. Cable has the same capabilities, and I'm sure that cable companies could attract a lot more cusotmers if they started competing a little more and I don't buy this 'it costs us too much' BS. I'm no accountant, but I'm sure there's plenty of fat in that budget to where they could absorb the costs somehwere. It's not like they have to pay more for their connection and therefore have to 'pass the buck' on to the customer like a gas company or the electric company (although I don't totally buy that either).

In my area we do not have what you refer to as "solid uptime and superior technology". Maybe some areas do but mine isn't and apparently there are others. I think another reason people are fussing is there is a money crunch now a days and when you start looking at priorities this is too much money for internet access.

In my case the $39 earthlink will work fine. All I do is read forums, newspapers, email and pay bills. But I'm an old fart. You younger folks might find more to do on the internet. So, it sucks that I have to pay the extra 10 a month, but in the long run, it's still saving me some money over the typical dsl/phone option.

The Charter tech that posted earlier in the thread has been very helpful in identifying some of the speed problems I was having. I need a new cable modem due to some firmware issues and I need to have a tech come out and check my lines as the downlevel power specs are off some. I'm sure that I'll be able to get my speeds up to close to what they should be. They did tell me I could keep getting the $42.99 package if I purchased basic cable for $16.99. Sure, 23 channels of which more than have are government & advertising. I have seen my Pipeline price increase 100% in just over 2 years, with very little speed increase. I have always been on the lowest speed category, but I would still get around 1000 download prior to the speed increase, which is OK for what I do, and now get 1400 download. I started out with an internet bill of only $24.95 including modem in 2002, now it is over $50. :huh:
