[Vonage] Consenses - Behind or in front of router w/Vonage?I am a newbie to all of this and I currently have my Vonage Linksys RT31P2 set up before my DLink router. Is there a consenses regarding which works better in terms of sound quality?
Every once in a while I get someone who says they cannot hear me. Maybe twice in 2 weeks so I am looking to tweak it a bit.
I am using Comcast Cable as my ISP and have currently adjusted Vonage for the highest sound quality.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks! |

Test it behind your router. It should work. Or better yet trash your D-Link and use you RT31P2 as your new router. It will probably work best that way. Linksys routers tend to be better than D-Link routers based on my experience. |

to wiretrip
I would love to do that wiretrip but the dlink is wireless and the RT31P2 is wired only.
I'll give it a shot behind and see if its any better. Looks like the consenses from that other topic shows that. |

Re: [Vonage] Consenses - Behind or in front of router w/Vonage?The Dlink router in my opinion works better than the Linksys. When I had Linksys router I had nothing but problems. I had it for several years with nothing but headaches. In spite of multiple software/firmware upgrades it was never solid. I constantly had to reboot the router every few days. I went to the wireless Dlink afew months ago and it is the most reliable router I have had so far. I don't know why so many poster's want Linksys? Go...Dlink and I know I am going to get lots of flames but this is my opinion which is based on hard knocks. |

Re: [Vonage] Consenses - Behind or in front of rouAs I replied in that other thread, my Moto box is behind my router and runs very well there. Stable as can be. |

I have to say that I am happy with my DLink wireless router as well. Very solid for the six months that I have had it. It is the DI-624 with Super G firmware upgrade.
Anyway, tomorrow I'll test it behind and see what happens.
On cable, I assume that placing the Vonage bandwidth saver to the best quality setting is an ok thing to do? |

Remember if you put the RT31P2 behine the DLINK, you will loose any QoS for your phone calls, unless the DLNK has QoS options in the farmware. I have the RT31P2 and a Linksys Wireless router (BEFW11S4). I have the RT31P2 first and the Wireless router second. I do not utilize the "router" functions of the BEFW11S4 (i.e. the WAN port is not plugged in). Basically the wireless router is really a wireless switch; extra LAN ports and wireless.
This configuration has worked best for me w.r.t. call quality. However I think that Vonage needs to work on the firmware of the RT31P2, as it is a bit quirky.

Re: [Vonage] Consenses - Behind or in front of router w/Vonage?I just posted this in another thread. Once again I should mention I am not into Gaming or P2P. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I actually have the MTA between my cable modem and wireless router. Look at attached file for my initial and current setup. With initial setup wife was threatening to cancel service. but after 2 weeks I changed to the current setup and 3 months later we still have the service. I am not a gamer but the rest of the stuff works. VPN (2 Nortel VPNs to work simultaneously) works. I regularly (daily) establish a remote desktop connection to my Laptop (XP professional) from work. Absolutely no voice/call quality issues except for the VT-1000 caller ID bug. I run a DynDns update client on one of my home PC to update the IP address with DynDns. I understand there is a double NAT is this case but I have absolutely no issues with it. What I have done is to assign the Router WAN address as the DMZ address on the MTA. For this reason I had to hard code the WAN address on the router, otherwise with DHCP the MTA assigns a new address to the Router WAN port every time something reboots thus breaking the DMZ and incoming connections. The only issue I have with this is I have to also hard-code the ISPs DNS addresses on the router. But those are fairly stable and I don't think the ISPs change them often (I never had to change mine ever since I set it). I am not sure why people are wary of this setup. I did not want to spend money on a QOS router for no reason. |

It sounds like more recent Moto firmware updates have fixed some bugs, as it used to be that VPN was a big issue with that box in front of a router. It was also more likely to need reboots if out in front. Glad to hear that it's working well for you now and that the QoS is effective. That was also another complaint, that the Moto box's QoS wasn't really very effective and that even routine web surfing could disrupt calls. |

This is what I have right now.
Software Version: VT20_01.2.d4 Bootrom Version: VT20_01.2.d4 Hardware Version: Model: VT1000 Revision: 0 BSP: 1.2/0
I did have to call them up initially to push new firmware on to the box after which VPN started working. |

Re: [Vonage] Consenses - Behind or in front of router w/Vonage?You can always turn your wireless DLink router into just an access point: disable DHCP, give it a LAN address on the LAN segment of the Linksys box, connect it through a LAN port rather than the WAN port. |

Re: [Vonage] Consenses - Behind or in front of rouI am not a vonage customer yet but if I only purchase the RT31P2 Linksys, would that be the only equipment I need since this is a router and has a phone adaptor in one box. Would I need any other equipment?
Thanks. |

Moto box has been "motovating" just fine. Behind a netgear RP614 router. |
