[cable] Cannot access configuration on Ambit Modem/RouterCannot access configuration on Ambit Modem/Router
Time Warner New York City
Time Warner has apparently removed some of the configuration options from the web interface for my Ambit Wireless Modem/Router. However, I need to alter my port forwarding settings. I have called them and gone through their horrible support system until I finally talked to someone who told me they don't support those features. My question is, how do I restore the modem/router configuration so that I can make the necessary changes?
I have tried accessing the modem/router via telnet, but that appears to be blocked. I can access the web interface (192.168.0.1) using username: user, password: user, but there's nothing there that seems to allow me to restore Ambit's original setup (even "restore factory defaults" doesn't bring back the original software options). Other usernames and passwords that I have found on the web do not work (eg. admin, root, etc.)
I figure TW must have some other way of accessing the modem, and I want to know what it is. Could it be through the USB port? (connecting via wireless or ethernet makes no difference in the web interface or lack of telnet access) Would there be a physical switch of some sort on the device itself?
This has been a very frustrating problem, and I'm hoping there's a solution that doesn't involve buying my own modem/router and telling TW to shove it.
Thanks for any help you can offer! |

Re: [cable] Cannot access configuration on Ambit MDon't know about that, but I turned off the firewall and had my old wireless router do the actual port forwarding. |

That link to the port forwarding (and other) functions no longer works on my router. Apparently the firmware has been updated by Ambit, and they are now using an .asp driven interface for configuration. the old .html links are no longer functional.
I've checked Ambit's website, but can't find the appropriate URL to access the port forwarding option on this time warner-crippled cable router.
Any ideas? |

It is strictly a cable modem.
I haven't tried my combo unit yet. |

Hi,
I have the same problem with my ambit broadband and Time Warner. Did someone manage to find a way to do the port forwarding? If yes, can you PLEASE tell me how (my email : fsoussan@gmail.com) I tried the link that dmc33 provided but it does not work anymore. Thanks a lot.
Frank
PS: Do you think that if I change the modem (buy another brand like Linksys) it will work?? |

If you get a "regular" cable modem (like Linksys or Motorola), that hasn't been crippled by the ISP, you should have no problems. Just get one that is "modem only". If you need a router, buy it as a separate unit, that way you can make them do what you want, not what the ISP allows you to do. |

How many computers hook up to the cable? If 1, you don't need a router. If more than 1, then you do. |

Most cable ISPs do not allow you to operate a web site on your residential cable connection. If your ISP is not allowing web sites hosted on residential connections, they may block port 80 incoming to your modem. Or they may turn off features in the cable modem that allows it to do port forwarding.
If they don't block incoming port 80, you can use a cheap wired or wireless router to share your connection between two computers and do the port forwarding. |

I am having the same problem, on the RoadRunner ISP. The terrible outsourced tech support isn't much help either. |

Same thing, I had TW come and alls I wanted was the user/p.word combo but the guy went around to all the computers making sure the internet was right then says "it looks good to me" and I went off on him. He told me that "You're not supposed to have access to the router." and "If you try changing the settings then you won't have to terminate your service, time warner will come get the box". Is this guy serious or for real? Because i'm fucked if they terminate our cable tv...don't care about the net though... |
