Re: 3com still freezes me up!!When I hooked up DSL for my friend they had shipped him the 3Com PCI. He was running a WinME box at the time with a P3450. I ran into a problem with he modem and after much testing came to find that he had a SBLive! Gamer Ed. Sound card that was causing driver conflicts. I moved it over to Win2000 config and it worked fine but would lock up after browsing over a network. Using a gateway and Win98 it worked fine. Check to make sure connection sharing is turned off and uninstalled with any operating system using the internal PCI. If you need to share a connection ask if theyll swap you for a USB. |

thanks for the replies fellas.
everything in my device manager is fine, no yellow marks there. My soundblaster card has no conflicts and is supposedly working , but i bet my sound card is causing this freeze up with the modem.
So, red, what should i do with the SB card? i am running win98SE. I have even switched my sound card to different slots ,but still no luck.
Please help me resolve this. I am sooooo close to getting this thing knocked out. I like the internal, but just keeps frustrating me.
thanks |

The problem may not be a conflict so to speak. You need to check what IRQ the 3COM PCI modem is using and see if it is sharing it with your SB Live or your video card. Go to your control panel and choose system---device manager--- Computer---and then select IRQ's. This will give you a list of all the hardware that is installed and what IRQ's they are holding. The 3COM likes to be on IRQ 11. You may have a PCI steering control holder there...that is Ok...but if you have a video card or your sound card... this can cause conflicts. Windows does not detect it because it should be able to share but when the modem is active and running... its pulling alot of info...READ very active... and when the other devices kick in or "do something" the computer locks up.
You can also make sure the SB Live does not have DOS emulation active...if so try to disable it in the device manager.
Just some thoughts.
Good Luck. |

00- System timer 01- Keyboard 02- Programmable interrupt controller 03- SCI IRQ used by ACPI bus 04- Communications port (COM1) 05- ACPI IRQ holder for PCI IRQ steering 05- CREATIVE SB LIVE 05- VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Univ. Host controller 05- """""""""same as above""""""" 06- Floppy 07- Printer port 08- System CMOS/real time clock 09- Creative SB16 Emulation 10- ACPI IRQ holder for PCI IRQ steering 10- Creative CT6955 11- ACPI IRQ holder for PCI IRQ steering 11- 3COM ADSL PCI MODEM 12- mouse 13- Numeric data processor 14- VIA Bus master PCI IDE controller 14- Primary IDE controller (dual fifo) 15- VIA bus master PCI IDE controller 15- Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)

Well from your post there is nothing I can see that would cause you any conflicts. Everything looks good as far as the IRQ's go. If the SB emulation does not help then there maybe nothing you can do if you are still experiencing freezes using the modem. My only advice would be to get an Alcatel Speedtouch USB modem from the helpdesk or buy yourself an Alcatel Speed Touch Home. The ASTH is the best modem supported by Bellsouth...the only issue is you have to pay for it.
I know its not what you want to hear but its all I know to advise. There maybe other 3COM users here who could offer advise but there actually may be no cure.
YES!!! I am very big VOLS fan. In about another month starts my time of the year. Beating Florida is the goal but I am taking a wait and see approach.
GO BIG ORANGE!!!
Sorry.... Had to do it!!!!
Good luck! |

Lee-
Glad you explained that the "DAWGS" were MSU dawgs...I almost thought you meant the U of Ga "DAWGS"- referred to by many GaTech fans (see my avatar) as the "Bullfrogs".
Thanks for the clarification!
