anon posted : duh....where have you been? Verizon Wireless is already kicking butt all over the place, especially since the wireless number portability of last year (they have gained over 10 million subcribers from that alone). Nextel can't stand on their own network and neither can PCS-
I work with all Wireless carriers at various levels and we get the best service from Verizon because we have the most phones with them- but Nextel CS sucks more than even the old Cingular (Cell One) ever did. I like Sprint better than any of the others- It works for me in most places and I like it well enough to tolerate the gaps in coverage.
I won't say I hate Nextel- but I think Nextel is the winner here because now they inherit a massive consumer base which they have been having a hard time aquiring- they are the small businessman's friend- and mostly blue collar stuff, too.
Oh well, at least it will be interesting.

It means that different wireless carriers has different networks, thus what works for Tom may not work for Tim. Hopefully people will understand what I am trying to say. Everyone is going to have a different experience with every company. If you live under a verizon tower, then Verizon will probably work better for you. Here's some facts for you.
Sprint has better wireless coverage than Nextel.
Sprint has better high speed wireless data than Nextel.
Sprint and Nextel both have a ton of MMDS spectrum. Sprint and MCI bought up most of the country. Nextel bought all of MCI's MMDS spectrum, when MCI went bankrupt. The merger would mean that they would own a large majority of the MMDS spectrum in the United States.
Nextel is has a test trial in North Carolina with a company called Flarion.
Cingular's high speed wireless data, well it just sucks.
Verizon has EVDO in some markets. There are test reports that show the SEVERE latency in Verizon's EVDO markets. Que buckets 3 minutes deep. Don't look for Verizon to provide quality high speed data service. They don't and can't. They don't understand the technology. This has already been demonstrated first hand. But, don't take my word for it, you can test it yourself and you'll see that Verizon EVDO is a latency ridden, poorly designed network.
Flarion is an awesome company. 2.8mbs at 80 miles an hour, all the way on a sector edge.
I CHALLENGE ANYONE ON THIS FORUM TO SHOW ME A BETTER HIGH SPEED WIRELESS DATA SERVICE THAN FLARION.
You simply can't.
Cingular will start losing some of it's AT&T wireless customers that it aquired from the AT&T Wireless purchase, as soon as AT&T's NEW wireless network is up and running. Customer loyalty will run its course.
The merger of these two companies will create the best wireless high speed data service available. Their combined ARPU's will generate enough money to invest in the new technologies.
But then again, what do I know?

Always two there are, a master and an apprentice.

sabersaw posted : TDMA was king for a long time around here, and personally I would rather have TDMA rather than GSM for now. There is a huge network from Louisville Ky, thru Dayton Oh, up to Columbus Oh. Plus TDMA phones will roam onto AMPS systems. I have hashed this out for several months, because I was ready to try out GSM. But I travel thru rural parts of the country where AMPS can be your friend.. ask my buddy who blew a radiator hose last week, he had to walk 45 minutes to get service with his GSM phone in WV, he said he could actually see cell towers while he couldn't get a signal. He called me while waiting for a tow truck to tell me I was right, because I kept telling him that his Cingular phone was not good for where he traveled to all the time.

Ark4 posted : Nextel wants a deposit if you have medium or no existing credit. I had to pay $500 per phone ($1000 total) deposit for the first year to get my service. I paid less then $1000 month to month that first year, then got my $1000 back. I do not have bad credit at all, in fact, I paid my car off so early that it is no longer recent enough to show up on my credit history, and I pay for so many things directly with my debit card instead of wasting time with a credit card middleman that I would just pay off each month and that doesn't help me either. Since then I've purchased a new house and gotton a credit card just to use for all my puchases and pay off each month. Its not like I need it, but I need my credit to show up as great and not hardly-existing.

As far as the merger goes, I will probably cancel service if anything at all gets remotely bad. I do not like Sprint at all and see this move as very bad for Nextel. I have incredible service with Nextel and can get a signal in remote places absolutely nobody else in my family can get with T-Mobile or Verizon or Sprint right now (In the middle of the lakes at Coldwater/Quincy, MI). I never get any dropped calls with Nextel, and the walkie-talkie feature is very useful as well. The only bad side to Nextel phones is how they make ticking noises in unshielded nearby speakers when you aren't even using them.

anon posted : Sprint Needs Nextel, Nextel DOES NOT NEED Sprint....
The only reason these companies are even considering merging is that there is massive consolidation happening in the industry... Verizon bought like 3-4 smaller companies over the years, att/cingular merged, t-mobile is likely to merge... and sprint and nextel are still dancing while the last beat of the music is ready to end... its the size that matters and market share..
I hate sprint... they NEVER took the customer's side when considering dropped calls, billing mistakes, and poor customer service (did I mention bad equipment).. that was years ago, maybe they improved somewhat, maybe not.. Nextel at least tries to do right by the customer, sometimes... not all the time.. I wish there were more towers in the Nassau/Suffolk areas of Li, NY though... service is spotty here.. but good when traveling to the city.

If nextel goes into the crapper because of sprint, guess what?!?!?! Verizon will go KA-CHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They better consider this merger VERY CAREFULLY!!!!!!!
