Solved My Bandwidth Problem

anon posted : OK, so I'm using the thumbs up for Earthlink's help and the fact that my own thumb must have been up an unspeakable place when I was troubleshooting my service problem the other night.

So, I recently reported sub-300K performance on what had always been a great connection (I can see my CO from my house). Today, I called E/L to follow up on the case I opened several nights ago. While I think I heard an entire performance of Beethoven's 6th Symphony on hold, the wait was rewarded by a conversation with the most helpful tech I've spoken with at E/L to date. Luckily, I ended up with a senior level guy who didn't take the details of my case history too seriously and walked through the problem from the beginning with a very intelligent and methodical set of questions. I can honestly say I learned something good from the call regarding factors that can affect performance.

What did the resolution come down to (and why do I feel stupid)? Recycling (restarting) my DSL MODEM did the trick! This is one thing I DID NOT DO when I first encountered the problem. I am especially ashamed because it's the kind of thing that I normally tell friends or co-workers to do before all other suggestions. As the E/L tech pointed out, this is something people should really do every week.

Now, why didn't E/L suggest this the other night???

chuman2 posted : I too have been very happy with Earthlink for over 3 yrs. DSL was great until I moved and its been a nightmare since I moved in May. The last straw came last Saturday when my rate finally went up to 49.95 after being assured by a Supervisor in June that it wouldn't. I even had his first/last name but the billing Supervisor on the line flat out said "how do I know you arent just lying and trying to get the 39.99 rate from me?" then refused to even call the other guy to verify. Anyhow, with all the moving headaches and dl speeds of 206/105, about 25 calls( I kid you not about this)to tech support to no avail and continuous double billing problems, Ive lost my loyalty to a once good ISP(at least from a customer service standpoint). Today I gave up and ordered Cox@home cable which in my area has been getting great speeds at a decent price of $34.95. Im sad because Earthlink used to provide me such great service. (sigh) Look what they've become....yahoo cable!!!

Previous to this, there was only one time--right around the end of last year--when the service was down just about every other evening for 20 to 30 minutes.
Slow Down/Port Rate Reduction?

anon posted : Like eye4fx, I would say the past week to ten days has seen throughput at about 1/3 of what I normally get. Tonight, while on hold with Earthlink, I'm getting around 220K down. Level one support has just told me that, despite being practically on top of my CO (4000ft), my switch is actually set at a max of 280-something. Of course, this was put as "Covad has set the port rate at 280...." In other words, according to Earthlink, this is something intentional. I asked if this implies others attached to my CO are experiencing the same problem. "No, it's specific to [my] connection." Huh? I'm now listening to classical (calming?) music, on hold for Level Two support... ... ....
[text was edited by author 2001-08-02 01:40:20]
