So, I recently reported sub-300K performance on what had always been a great connection (I can see my CO from my house). Today, I called E/L to follow up on the case I opened several nights ago. While I think I heard an entire performance of Beethoven's 6th Symphony on hold, the wait was rewarded by a conversation with the most helpful tech I've spoken with at E/L to date. Luckily, I ended up with a senior level guy who didn't take the details of my case history too seriously and walked through the problem from the beginning with a very intelligent and methodical set of questions. I can honestly say I learned something good from the call regarding factors that can affect performance.

What did the resolution come down to (and why do I feel stupid)? Recycling (restarting) my DSL MODEM did the trick! This is one thing I DID NOT DO when I first encountered the problem. I am especially ashamed because it's the kind of thing that I normally tell friends or co-workers to do before all other suggestions. As the E/L tech pointed out, this is something people should really do every week.

They have no friggin idea of what is going on. Pretty amazing that thousands of people for the last week or so(nationwide, no less) have suddenly started experiencing highly varied and slow throughput with no change in setup...the problem is on their end, not ours!

I have had Earthlink DSL for almost a year and have never really had much to complain about. Previous to this, there was only one time--right around the end of last year--when the service was down just about every other evening for 20 to 30 minutes.
