I have tried both Auto Vcc and manual setting (at and above default 1.75v to max) with little or not difference being the result.

I thought my NIC would cause problem at a FSB of 140 and up but it didn’t. I’ll see if I can duplicate that 9x144 because it just seems to good to be true. It was the last setting I tried and I don’t recall how well I tested stability. If I can hit 9x150 or even 8.5x150 I would consider that to be a good sign for the AD11.

Right now I suspect the (AXIA, Y) CPU, the PSU and the RAM as possible culprits but not the mobo. I’ll swap out each component in turn and that should be good enough to isolate the problem.

I just ordered another stick of 256 MB Crucial PC2100 RAM but I might opt to get some cosair as well.

Now I just need to order the Enermax EG-365P-VE. Here it is in all it default FSB glory.

In QuakeIII I get something like 131 FPS at normal settings. In Unreal tournament I see about 120 FPS. But in STV Elite Force I only see at best 99.0 FPS, which I don’t quite get because STVEF uses the QuakeIII engine. I guess the Raven mod is what accounts for the difference.

have you tried -
vcc to autodetect (yes - 686b calculated vcc will show 1.81 - but should be ok)
mem timings to auto -
9x140
that's where I start then up to 10x140 very nice and then push the mem timings, and after clean run through, reset vcc back to manual at 1.75 - she run good. at 10.5x140 1.75 vcc post but shaky boot, so up goes the vcc and ok.

Oct i believe its your DDR . your ddr should post 138 at only 2.5/2.6 vmem with no trouble . course high 140 up the vmem etc. but you ain't near it. i just put in a stick of cosair and also the heatsink mounted on it . look at the marks i posted . and there's alot left in my lil 1.2axia. my
crucial could post at 154 but it wasn't stable ?? cosair is Very Stable , smooth .

I have been playing with some multiplier and FSB settings. It seems for the moment that default speed is the upper limit for this CPU. In other words at Vcc set to 1.75v:

9x144 = 1296MHz All good

9.5x140 = 1330MHz A.O.K

9.5x138 = 1311MHz Good to go

10x133 = 1333MHz Default rock steady

10x138 = 1380MHz cranky, lockups and reboots even with upping the Vcc

One thing I didn’t try is lower then default FSB speeds. I might give the 100MHz FSB a try just for kicks but I don’t think I can set the multiplier higher then 12.5x.

I have gotten very accustomed to judging a chip merely on its stepping and I guess that it would be logical for there to be some variation of quality within a given stepping or batch.

I guess this is along the lines of what Kat was saying.

I did a little tweaking that resulted in improved SiSoft MEM benchmarks. Still, they don’t quite reach yours or Kat’s. My guess is that this is because you two have higher FSB settings because I’m trucking along at default FSB (go ahead and laugh I can take it:)).

I’ll post some SiSoft screen-shot as well but I haven’t installed a program that will allow me to do this yet. Speaking of which, I see that you have upgraded or changed the program that allows you to do this.

I agree with you on the ECS K7S5A 735. The review I read on it didn’t impress me one bit. I can wait until other boards from well-known and reputable manufacturers are available. Hopefully, these new boards will have a better feature set as well.

I just checked out pricewatch and saw that they have the ECS K7S5A 735 board out for only $63. I don’t know for sure but I think I’ll pass on that one because it has no OC features other then FSB. I thank you for your advice and the offer of the chip. It seems to be a testament to your generous and good nature but I will only take the advice :)

Now I am just trying to figure out what I am going to tell the distributor. Some how I don’t think they want to hear, "yeah, it works fine at default speed but it wont OC worth a dang". I forget the name of the dealer but it wasn’t one of those OC shops with pre-tested OCed chips. It came with a one-year warranty and no indication that it would do anything other then default but I can still give it a try because I have nothing to lose.

I cant help but think that it is very odd that the chip would be so unstable at even a very low OC (and bump in Vcc) but I will get to the bottom of this and post my results (hopefully soon). I’m only a little disappointed because I do like a challenge and if the chip fired-up to 1.5 or 1.6 with no trouble then………..where’s the challenge?

What I am going try is:

New PSU - Enermax EG-365P-VE (probably)

New CPU(s) 1400MHz (unknown stepping)

I need a new mobo (probably will get another AD11) for a general upgrade of an older PC (Celeron1 300A will OC to 450MHz).

I’ll do a little research on PSUs and decide if I want 1 or 2 chips and then place my order.

Thanks for the info Ten, it’s good to hear about a nice OC even when I can’t seem to get my rig to do any better then stock. Sooner or later I will get the situation under control and get a little extra Hz out of this system even if I have to buy a new chip and OC that one.

With prices where they are now it is very tempting to just order a 1400/266 or two but I just can’t shake the feeling that the A4 will be out (and at a relatively low price) right after I buy a T-bird or two.

In any case, I would give my 1333MHz chip to my wife but I would have to buy another mobo to go with it as well.

One thing that has always bothered me though was paying extra for a particular stepping. It seems to me that if you should pay more then AMD would specify price according to stepping (not necessarily by MHz/GHz) and to the best of my knowledge they do not do this. It is really just a matter of principle for me but when I bought my 1333MHz AXIA, Y the stepping was not specified in the ad and I didn’t pay extra for it so I was pleasantly surprised to see what the dealer had sent me.

Hopefully, I will be just as fortunate the second time around (if I go for a T-bird) but I suspect that there will be little or no variation in the new stepping for the first set of A4 CPUs.

Sorry that you were disappointed...probably many others too.
With respect to the reviews, etc. I believe that "true data"
i.e. hard facts regarding hardware capabilities and performance are hard to come by. Sites that objectively reveiw hardware are becoming more rare as commercial pressure increases. Witness Tencz's open & honest comments re the "hot" EPoX 8K7A+ mb - what site will disclose that depth and quality of information he shared? None really. Examine the reviews and "stated" performance of the Shuttle AK31 rev 2.0 mb - outstanding, if you believe the reviews - yet how many know that the stunning performance was achieved with a Bios version (9.0) unavailable to the general public (still is as of to-day - e-mail Shuttle and ask for it...I did and got nowhere) yet supplied to reviewers with hand-selected mbs that would perform at very high levels. Sorry folks, honest hardware reviews are getting harder to come by. That's why sites like this are important...you hope to get some kernels of truth.
Regarding the latest TB steppings...I doubt that anything will equal the AXIA for oc-ability. These chips were anomalies - process "freaks" in an era of strictly controlled processes. As AMD's technology evolves/matures the silicon scientists will exercise greater control over the yields and quality of the process output - meaning that chips that overclock 30%-40% of "sold-as speed" will simply not be produced - it's bad business over the long run. In the short-term the attention and market stimulation might lead some to believe that AXIA & AHYJA oc capabilities were intentional. I believe that short term the process outran the controls and we all witnessed a genuine treat courtesy of AMD - we got much more than we expected and paid for.
The future isn't all bleak...we (all us "peeps") can openly share all we know and tip the balance of information (power really) in our collective favor.

BTW, just in case you guys didn't know, the same people that own the scheister store OCZ own AthlonOC and the other sites associated with/mentioned on it. If you'll notice, a really unbelievable claim about certain CPUs shows up on AthlonOC about the time OCZ has them advertised on the front page of the store.
