IowaViking posted : It's not that the tech support people at Mediacom don't know routers or home networking. It's a matter of the fact there are more people who don't use routers with Mediacom's service than do. Therefore they aren't supported. And it's not too hard to hook up a router anyways. My own grandmother was able to hook one up, go to SAS, and register it all on her own. Had no need to contact tech support at all. I just don't get it.
--
\m/(-_-)\m/
DAILY HAROLD - MMHA - RRB
Freedom of speech is wonderful - right up there with the freedom not to listen.

IowaViking posted : The other issues I definitely agree need to be addressed. Won't deny that. But the tech will bypass a router. He has the right to do so if you want him to install the product. That's all I'm saying.
IowaViking posted : scooter is 100% correct. Mediacom does not support router or networking. Now granted some techs will hook up a router but that's up to the tech. Standard procedure is to hook up directly to a computer and if a router is in place to bypass it. Nothing was done wrong far as that goes.
--
\m/(-_-)\m/
DAILY HAROLD - MMHA - RRB
Freedom of speech is wonderful - right up there with the freedom not to listen.

scooter2479 posted : Well I can tell you that we don't hook up to anything like a router or switch when we do an install. We do no kind of networking at all and if you were there the tech would have told you that and still would have had to bypass the router. It is in our TOS. You can hook it up after we leave, thats fine but we don't touch it. Too much to go wrong and installs would take alot longer if we did trying to set it all up.

[FL] Mediacom and bad on-site server

hirogen posted : Come an listen to my story of a man name Shawn, A poor computer tech, that just wants service done.
I moved into an old house that needs a lot of work done to it. I got several rooms remodeled and wanted to get cable hooked up. I placed an order for basic cable, 1 movie pack, cable modem and a DVR. I spent my whole day off running new cables to the two locations that I wanted hooked up. I have one line that goes directly to the cable modem and the other split in 2 for the 2 TVs. The only thing the cable guy needed to do was run a cable line to the pole and ground it, then connect the two lines. Well, he did not ground the splitter on the power pole. That was the first problem. Now the cable modem, I have my network all setup and tested. I got a shelf setup for the modem and router. All he had to do is plug the modem in and it would of worked. But that's to easy, he told it upon himself to bypass my router and switch to hookup one computer. So now I have to go back behind him and set it up correctly again then call tech support to activate the router MAC address so I can have my other computer on-line. I work so I was not there to correct him or have him at least try it first. I had to get a friend that does not know networking to let him in the house to set everything up. I don't care who you are, you just don't go messing around with someone’s network without permission. Then we come to the DVR. What DVR you ask, well that is my question too. He did not have it and did not know when I would get it. I called my friend from work to find all this out. I then called customer service to run down the situation. Nothing she can do about the modem. I have to call tech support when I get home and the DVR she tracks it down. It will be delivered tomorrow. I tell her I would not be at home. She says someone can call you 30 mins before hand to give you time to get someone over there. Well, guess what, the tech shows up without calling and leaves a note. I stopped by and you where not here, no call at all. So, at lunch I call and they tell me we will see if we can get the tech back out there some time today, maybe. What the frell kind of service is this? If Mediacom was not the only game in town I would cancel my service and go else where. I'm going to have to ground my cable connection myself. I don't think it's worth the trouble to try and get someone back out there to do that and where is this DVR at, come on guys.
