No wonder they call em CMTSC - Cable M - Modem T - Terminator or Termination S - Service
LOL ever since this summer they introduced these cable modem terminators my pings died... They terminated my damn modem! What was the reason of having bringing these things that got out of control? all they were supposed to do is just make my damn modem unable to take a manual IP. but now look. Modem is dead! BS Send em back to space for ever and never hook them up to our lines again! |

What???
Obviously you haven't read much of the explinations being given by Sbrook about how things work. Take a moment to re-read the posts.
YOU ARE IN A CONGESTED AREA, YOU NEED TO BE RESEGMENTED. It will probably happen at some point.
Please from now on stop with the meanless posts about things you know very little about.
A cmts is not new and it's not why you have problems with your ping times. |

The CMTS is the Cable Modem Termination System. It is required for ALL types of cable modems, whether new or old. For some of the old modems, you didn't see the CMTS as a hop. Amongst other things, one of its functions is to be "the modem at the other end". |

I dont know what they had, but I had the same modem and it did not show up on the 1st hop, but after the summer it did, so they must have reconfigured it to terminate our pings! |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but put it simply, a CMTS is just a bridge. And since a bridge is not a route of its own, would not show up on a standard traceroute. Even if it was a managed CMTS, (which I severely hope it is) you would still have to know the ip address before you could ping it.
What you are probably pinging is your gateway, the first route out of your CMTS. |

No, a CMTS isn't simply a bridge. Just like our modems are not simply bridge devices.
For example, when I was on the TeraPro, the first hop was TLGWnn.flfrd.phub.etc which is the TeraLink controller which essentially controls all the CMTS units in its rack. Next hop is the first gateway after the CMTS - GW03.flfrd.phub.etc.
Now, with DOCSIS, the first hop is a 10.*.*.* non-routing IP which is the CMTS followed by GW03.flfrd.phub.etc.
In both cases the next hop is the main router out of the flfrd phub ... GW01
It is possible to configure the CMTS to not show in a tracert.
In most cases, that hop is a 10.*.*.1 IP address and all the modems hung on it are a 10.*.*.nn all in the same group. |
