sbrook posted : No, a CMTS isn't simply a bridge. Just like our modems are not simply bridge devices.

For example, when I was on the TeraPro, the first hop was TLGWnn.flfrd.phub.etc which is the TeraLink controller which essentially controls all the CMTS units in its rack. Next hop is the first gateway after the CMTS - GW03.flfrd.phub.etc.

Now, with DOCSIS, the first hop is a 10.*.*.* non-routing IP which is the CMTS followed by GW03.flfrd.phub.etc.

In both cases the next hop is the main router out of the flfrd phub ... GW01

It is possible to configure the CMTS to not show in a tracert.

In most cases, that hop is a 10.*.*.1 IP address and all the modems hung on it are a 10.*.*.nn all in the same group.

GI Suck posted : Correct me if I'm wrong, but put it simply, a CMTS is just a bridge. And since a bridge is not a route of its own, would not show up on a standard traceroute. Even if it was a managed CMTS, (which I severely hope it is) you would still have to know the ip address before you could ping it.

What you are probably pinging is your gateway, the first route out of your CMTS.
--
[Internet] Rogers Yahoo!
sbrook posted : The CMTS is the Cable Modem Termination System. It is required for ALL types of cable modems, whether new or old. For some of the old modems, you didn't see the CMTS as a hop. Amongst other things, one of its functions is to be "the modem at the other end".
