McSummation posted : Contact the power company. Their insurance may pay for all the damage.

We had a high voltage condition that lasted several minutes one Thanksgiving Day. It ruined the light on the aquarium and element in the oven. When we noticed that things were not working right (lights bright, sparks in oven, hot plastic smell by the aquarium) I check the voltage, then called the power company. They said, "Oops! Send us the bills for whatever you have to replace." I did, they paid right up.

Complete with fire damage to the plastic cover. Must have been a strange surge.

tsavos posted : I bought a Dell Dimension 4700 desktop around new years. Today (1/26) I come home and find my PC will not start at all. No noise, no lights, nada.

I open the case and find nothing out of the ordinary. Called Dell, ran through some tests, still nothing. They are sending me a new power supply.

So I unplug my peripherals and take out the supply, there is a small brown mark on the grating on the back of the supply. A closer check with a flashlight revealed what looks to be like some smoke damage in the corner, and some melted plastic pieces inside. Shaking the unit reveals that something is loose inside the unit.

Has anyone else seen this? What could have caused it? My PC stays off while no one is home, and I am plugged into a surge protector.

Thanks!
