Do you plan on staying with speak easy next year?

After your contract ends do you plan on staying with them? Not me cause I pay $100 a month for 4/768 when I can get the same from a cable company for $50/month.

For me there is no comparable service. The price is high, but I run a website and servers. Works for me.

Don't get me wrong, I love Speakeasy with everything it has to offer. However, if I can get a 6.0/768 RR connection once it rolls out; with no restrictions on running server(s) I'll jump on that if the price is right. I hate to say this after all the people I have referred to Speakeasy, but it all comes down to competition and the level of service I receive for the ammount I pay per month.

It would take a lot to make me jump. Servers are a big thing - web *and* mail and don't forget rdns too.

At full 6.0 speeds I almost drown in the possibilities so even if a jump to 8.0 came along it wouldn't be enough to make me jump (maybe enough to ensure I'd stick around longer though )

It'd probably take fiber and just really really ridiculous speeds (plus servers) to make me twitch.

Absolutely. I run servers off my 768k line, and I'd have an awful lot of upset people if I bailed and went to cable. I've considered paying $50/month and going through the hassle of rolling everything into one box to put my rackmount box into a colocation facility, but even that would be a pain. For one, I'd be paying $50 to them and $50 to the cable company (or more, since I'm not giving up my dish for anything) to gain: A supreme-o link to the internet; conditioned power; better cooling. However, I would lose all local control, from driving to a datacenter to fix anything, to not having my existing firewall and network structure.

Sure, I really, really wish Speakeasy would come out with some nicer speed packages. 3.0/768 would be tasty, but I'd much rather have 1.5/1.5 on a OneLink line (not gonna happen; it'd cannibalize their SDSL offering which, again, I would love to have but can't afford), since upstream is more important to me. However, it's not THAT important to give up what I have now. A reliable UPS (with another on the way) plus being able to tinker with my own ductwork provides all the security I need. I think Speakeasy realizes they have a market of people who are more technical than most, and are willing to pay for an ISP that will leave them alone and not treat them like an idiot. I'm one of those people.

Being able to change the reverse DNS on my IPs with just a single trouble ticket is THE best feature for me, as is the ability to run servers.

For me, that's what makes Speakeasy worth $130 a month after taxes.

I bow down to reverse DNS

SE helped me disablemy 10mb webspace account and Voip so I could add those ala carte from separate providers if need be. Adding to that was a 'customer loyalty' perk. I have been able to use the tac features as a exemplary resource. Add to this added servers and the limited support I've required over the years, I'm not heading south soon.

Ditto - I don't see anything else short of FIOS that would get me to switch. And even though I'm in an area that is suppose to get it "soon" I suspect that I will still be enjoying SE well into 2006.

I echo most all other posts.
I run servers.
There are days I move a LOT of data (rarely P2P, mostly work-related media files).
True static IPs.
No port blockings.
Good support.

FIOS would certainly make me consider it but it would have to be a pretty sweet offering. FIOS with caps, blocked ports, no servers, no static IP, and no servers wouldn't be worth it even for a huge speed upgrade.

Plus, FIOS will only be offered by VZ around here. It would have to be PRETTY SWEET for me to ditch SE and give more money to that stinkin' monopoly.

Re: Do you plan on staying with speak easy next year?

Where else can I get 6ms to my first hop (at 12000+ feet) and 2 hops and 78ms to the NAC! (I am in Seattle) + Servers + fixed IP etc. I doubt there will be a provider to match that in my area (Qwest land)

Once my contract's up, I will go with whoever offers me the best speed, along with static IPs and no port blocking. I run my own servers, so the latter two elements are critical. I might have to give Cox's business service plans a look see...

In shot, yes.

Connection reliability is better than the T1 where I work! Speed is excellent and Speakeasy has competent and professional in-house support. I've had my DSL circuit for 2 years and have no plans to switch.

I've been through:
Comcast
TimeWarner/RoadRunner
Sprint ION
Roadrunner, again
for myself;

And worked with
SBC Global
Charter
Roadrunner
for customers.

The level of support and quality of service from Speakeasy, along with the TOS, simply stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Raw through-put numbers are just that, numbers. When things get weird or broken, I want professional support, not a script reader. Speakeasy does that.

For a real education, read the TOS from TimeWarner and from Speakeasy.
Or, trying reselling your connection to your neighbors via wireless. Speakeasy will help you set it up, bill your neighbors, and give you a cut for the admin duties. Try that with the cable companies.

Contract up this month...probably won't stay.

$120 month for safe mode 6.0/768 just isn't cutting it...

That's a hyperbole. A T1 circuit is infinitely more reliable than any DSL circuit. You may have a SLA for your DSL just like a T1, but a T1 circuit has certain regulatory up-time requirements that DSL does not. I have had telcos respond in the middle of the night, weekends and holidays to fix T1 issues...good luck getting SBC or Verizon to respond within 1 hour if your DSL is down.

For most purposes, DSL is sufficiently reliable. But when your business is on the line and loss of connectivity equals loss in revenue, you don't want to depend on DSL.

Ya' know, for another $880 a month, Cogent will hook you up with a 100Mbps Fiber pipe.

Re: Do you plan on staying with speak easy next year?

It is a sad state of affairs when other ISPs offer customer service so bad that a company that is doing a decent job stands out. However, price & network changes are indeed becoming the issue. I have cable and dsl so I spend much of the day comparing the two. Speakeasy might sweeten the pie by offering me a couple of static IPs for being with them for many years. I suspect customer retention is going to be a problem for Speak in the future. Seems like most ISPs could care less about retention. Why is that? Do we always come back? Can I get phone co. dsl and cable both for the speakeasy price? I'm seriously looking at the situation.

LOL. I always thought Cogent's deal was that the price only applied if you got the circuit in a building where they already have fiber....as such, no loop charge. I can't remember if it was 100Mbps or 1000Mbps for $1000. Hell of a deal, either way.
