[LA] Horrible Ping Times with Xbox Live

Whenever I do a diagnostic test with the xbox dashboard

(network settings, test, hit Y button), The ping time (L)

is horrible, it is usually 89 to 91. These ping times are

awful. Granted I dont have packet loss, I always get 20/20.

Do any other Cox Cable users in Baton Rouge/New Orleans

area or, cox users in nearby states, have this problem also?

I don't have an xbox, but do you mean 89 to 91 ms?

If so that isn't bad at all....

LSU Tiger Jason

Anon

yeah its in ms, yeah but if you read on the xbox live forums, most people have around 60 ms, and I dont know much about internet or how the internet works, (I study agriculture not computers), but I thought that ping times close to 100 ms are bad

I have the same problem that you do. I used to get 30-70 ms on central and west servers but now its more like 80-100ms. On east servers I would get 80-100ms now I get 120+(its really unconstant).

my latency is also horrible, it stands around 99ms during offpeak, and 107 during peak hours, which makes hosting impossible, i have all this speed for nothing basically!

Well this is sort of odd, I just got a ps2, so I could play

killzone online, and when I do a ping test using the ps2

diagnostic software, my ping times are 57 - 60 MS, which is

about 30 ms lower than with xbox live. Why would ps2 have

lower ping times than xbox? I would think with the 5

dollars a month I pay for xbox live, I would have better

service. At least I know its not a Cox problem now.

LSU, can you host maximum games on Ps2?

LSU Tiger Jason

Anon

Yeah, I thought it was my cable connection, but xbox live doesnt seem to read my connection right. My ping times are around 57 ms for the ps2, compared to 87 to 90 for xbox live. Looks like ill start buying ps2 online games instead of xbox. I cant figure this out, I would think paying the 5 dollars a month for xbox live would give you better service, I guess not. Im just glad its not my internet connection.

What I would do is ping the xbox site and send Cox Tech1 the results explaning what is going on.

I hosted a 16 player game last night on killzone without any problem.

I just bought one of those new slimline ps2's, and it came with a cd, which had diagnostic software for your connection. It tests speed, trace route (i have no idea what that is), and ping times.

I did contact xbox live help, and of course they were not any help. From them I got the impression it was my internet connection. Im glad I found out its not.

Trace route, or tracert, is when the computer traces the exact path it uses to get to the final destination. It will give you the time it takes to get from the first hop to the next and so on. It is a pretty cool diagnostic tool

100-120 on the dashboard test is just fine i am consistenly in that range and host the maximum amount on any game with the premier tier.
some thing to consider when you compare what your ps is telling you compared to you xbox. do you know where either of them are connecting to run that ping test. when you are playing xbox you are directly connected to the ppl you are playing with not through xbox. I do not know if PS does it the same way or it they have central servers everyone connects too

i dont know what speeds are advertised for the buisness class where you live but the first thing you need to find out is how much ul/dl you are actually getting. i fought these problems long before the speed increases happened. first of all pay no attention to what the xbox tells you that you can host. im assuming youve tried hosting and everyone was compaining. these are the things i did

1. got a toshiba 2600 this was a big improvement when i had 384 U/L i could host 12 in any first person shooter but i would lag if i tried to go over 12
i dont know why this modem works but i know of about 10 other ppl that have done the same thing with the same results

2. i moved my modem and router right next to my xbox and am using 3' cat5 cables this took care of myself lagging when i would run 16

what router do you have?
have you hooked your xbox directly to you modem ?
if you are using wireless its usless if you want to host?

direct connected through the motorolla sb5120; on all of my test i get the advertised speeds for the business connection 5000/768. did i read you right when you said you use 3 inch cables? another thing im on the east coast and you are from kansas which means you could be on a whole different type of server... right? i dont know im just trying to figure all of this out. i have talked to a friend who also has cox, and they can only host 8 on xbl, but can host 16 on ps2 online

i meant to say 3 feet. and yes it probably is a different system but i really dont know how that all works. i wish i had some more awnsers for you. i know how frustrating it is with the xbox. i spent a couple of months and a few hundred dollars on modems and routers to get the xbox to work the way it should. besides recabling the entire house
so good luck let me know what you come up with

Ive been reading some posts on this forum from way back, and it seems a lot of people have trouble with cox cable and xbox. Ive read where some have said that cable internet is not made for online gaming, and its false advertisement by Cox. I guess xbox live and cox cable just dont mix well.

Nope. Until Cox fixes their latency issues they should remove that spot on their website. That IS false advertising. The UP TO's don't cover their ass on this one since were talking about latency.

I've been noticing my ventrilo server going from 50 to 4000ms more often.

Sometimes I wish we all had competition

You shouldn't be running a server Rob,

Also, the xbox problems are not everywhere. I know peeps here in AZ playing box online with no problems. Also most of them use xboxconnect so maybe the problem is with the Xbox servers???

Also like I said before I don't own an xbox but I play FPS oonline with my PC alot and have no problems with latency....

i just wish they would do something about this. i know people who have other cable isp's and they can host maximum games, but with cox having no competition there is no telling when they will fix this issue!

its sorta odd, i visited my parents house near new orleans, and they have bellsouth dsl. Their upload speed is around 225 kilobytes, I tested my xbox with it, and it said I could host 8 people in all of my games (which is the same results i get with cox) yet this speed is less than half of what i am getting with cox, isnt that crappy? Cox better hope comcast doesnt come here, cause ill leave cox immediately.

the xbox tells me i can only host 8 too. but i can run a dedicated server on one box for 16 and play on the other with no problems. dont just go by what the game tells you that you will be able to host

when you are playing xbox live and hosting you are the server except for in a few situations like some halo clan matches. and rainbow six clan matches which then the servers are run by the game manufacturer
