PPPoE vs. WinPoet

I'm getting DSL in about two weeks and I want to know which protocol I should look towards. I live in Brooklyn, NY (11235) and Earthlink will be providing my 'self install' DSL.

Well I have a standard 3Com 3C905B-TX PCI NIC.
My operating system is Windows Millennium (im thinking of switching to 2000 - but i play games most of the time). Suggestions on protocol?

Well, WinPOET is an implementation of PPPoE protocol. If your account is PPPoE, you have to have PPPoE software in order to make a DSL connection. WinPoet is simply software to make the PPPoE connection.

I think you might be asking if you should use RASPPPoE vs. WinPoet. Both are implementations of the PPPoE protocol. Most people will likely suggest you use RASPPPoE, with lots of compelling reason. I would suggest you use what the provider gives you until you have a working connection and know what to expect. Then decide which software to use.

There are forums here devoted to PPPoE and RASPPPoE. I would suggest you spend some time looking these over, there are a lot of details there.

Good luck.

Hi Johnny, Did you get a firm install date this time??? Hope so, I know you've been waiting for a long time. Hope all goes well with this one. I have PPoE, it works fine, I'm not a gamer and I'm not sure what the difference would be!!
