anon posted : Thanks for your input guys...

I was just curious on this subject, as I work for a DSL (PPPoE) ISP, and our customer's MAC address appears on the line tests we run. I would LOVE to work for Rogers Tech Support... I'd show them how to provide good tech support. hahahaha... :)

Sean8 posted : Technically that'd work, but a non-Rogers MAC won't authenticate on Rogers' network, and a non-Rogers modem won't autehnticate either. So they know who you are, always.

sbrook posted : It is not a "shared connection" - that's Sympatico publicity ... it's a shared pipe for *part* of the route between you and the head end.

What normally identifies you from your neighbour is indeed the address (either IP or the MAC or Serial Number) of your modem (depending on the technology). This is how the system determines who gets the next time slice to send data. So, they can tell how much data is directed to and received from any given modem.

anon posted : Hello all...

A friend and I were discussing... how does Rogers track the monthly usage? He thought that Bell could do it, because its a 'dedicated connection', whereas Rogers is a 'shared connection'.

I added my two cents to that by saying, perhaps they base it on your MAC address? IP Addresses change, MAC Addresses don't.

What do you guys think?

If this were the case, there could be ways around this. Such as changing to a different NIC card, a different computer, or specifying a MAC address clone in your router.

I'm sure that I won't use anywhere near the 60GB cap, so it probably won't cause me any difficulties.

anon posted : The cap goes into effect on the first day of your billing cycle, on or before March 17th, 2005. So if my billing cycle starts on March 17th, the cap goes into effect March 17th. If my billing cycle starts March 16, then the cap goes into effect April 16th. One more example: If my billing cycle starts March 2nd, well then the cap goes into effect April 2nd.
RR2
