Wily_One posted : A full backup, which Acronis will do, is just that, it backs up everything including program installs. Yes you would make a backup before working on the system. If the OS gets hosed, you recover by copying the backup image back to the hard drive.

bigyeah posted : It would be if I had a customers Xp box that needs a reformat to another Xp install and they want to back up all data. What would i use acronis for. wouldn't i use that Before i start working on the PC just in case? If i ghosted the hard drive and reloaded it after a format. Wouldn't it be the same as before?

If i am getting this right Wily_one, you suggest to back up data then reinstall all programs correcT? What if the customer does not have the CD for the program anymore, how would i go about dealing with that, tough luck?

Wily_One posted : If you have Acronis, I would use that. Instant hard drive backup.

Now, if you're talking about "backing up" application installations, that's a whole nother story. What I do is back up the data, and reinstall the application. There are programs that purportedly do what you're talking about, but I've never tried them.

What OS are you moving from? The XP Registry is very different than the 98 Registry, for example.

Wily_One posted : Back it up to another hard drive. It's the fastest way. The most economical would be another IDE drive connected internally, which you could then remove. They also have external drives expressly for this purpose, but will be slightly more expensive.

Tape drives with sufficient capacity to back up modern drive sizes are prohibitively expensive. Backing up to CD and even DVD would be slow and tedious, since they just don't have very much capacity and would require many, many discs.

bigyeah posted : What is the most effective way to back up computer data on a hard-drive that is about to get re-formatted. Or just wanted the pleasure of having everything backed up?
I am looking for a method of transferring and programs to use. I currently have Acronis True image to ghost the hard drive. But what about transferring methods. Set up a network and transfer, or have a slave hard drive in to transfer then remove the hard drive and put it back after format is complete to load files? What are you suggestions?
