Should blocks be lifted upon request?

As the topic states! should ports b blocked by default and lifted upon request of the user. In worse case make users pay for a static ip and allow them to request ports open instead of having to pay for a $90-159$ server package. Post your thoughts should all good user b forced to suffer the costs because of the bad ones!

I agree. I think make the customer pay for a static ip and block the ports by default allow them to request the ports open on there static. The static will hold them more accountable for there actions.

of course it should be, but this has been said many times in many threads. telus apparently doesn't care about it's users enough to be helpful in this way

I argued this with my managers and NS and everyone I could from the very beginning. I think that the small minority of customers that would actually request the ports on their lines be unblocked be allowed to be unblocked.

Oh, and as to disclaim, I don't feel that "I can't connect to my mail server" is a good excuse to unblock ports. That's what mail relaying is for.

You mean using Telus's SMTP server to send email as other domain? It's ok for now, but it may get kill by SPF (or is it Yahoo's Domain key??) in the future.

yup I agree! why make the customers that take there time securing there computers suffer when we have been allowed to run open and freely on the internet sence the beginning as long as we didnt abuse it. This is not the way to reward these customers. Port blocking is only a bandaid covering the infection it will only slow the current problems down for now. I am for open the ports on request

I'm about to make a unpopular comment.....

Telus offers plans at different prices with different features for a reason. It was clear from day 1 in the residential ADSL contract that you weren't supposed to run servers on your residential line. If you wanted to run a server you should have purchased a higher contract or found someone else offering the service cheaper.

That being said restricting access to external ports (company email servers for sending email) is unfair. As a IT manager I can understand why they would want to restrict it but can't endorse it.

Remember the best way to deal with this is to vote with your feet. Find that other company offering the services you want at a reduced price. Never be afraid to voice your opinions to Telus or any other company but understand that it is in the business of making money.

That being said I think a $15 Static IP/Server package would be a great addition to the residential line.

SPF or Domain Key may become an issue in the future. To be honest, I have 0 need for a static IP, however I do lease server space and on occasion need to transfer files from my home computer to my remote computer originating at the remote computer.

Rest assured that MSN messenger doesn't run on Unix

Come to think of it, it's really hard to start a remote file transfer on MSN if you aren't on that computer

I would be willing to pay an additional amount to have this capability. It beats switching to Shaw, especially in my neighbourhood (working for telus helps to )

However, it would also be nice that instead of treating all customers like complete idiots that we could have the option of having ports unblocked. I'm not going to run out and start a public FTP server to share music, but I do have a use for it even (hard to believe, I know) if it IS for my own personal use.

I figured the rule should be that everyone is blocked, you can request it be unblocked, but if you screw up (virii, open ftp, web server) then you are done forever. Seemed reasonable enough to me.

Apparently "milking" their system for all it's worth is more important that some customers.

centericq has MSN support, as well as the fact you can always use scp/SSH to transfer files.

First off I hate having port 80 blocked.

RE: "It was clear from day 1 in the residential ADSL contract that you weren't supposed to run servers"
Not really they recently (Year ago?) changed this. They stated in their agreement you could run servers so long as you stayed within bandwidth limits.

Seconds if you know what you're doing it's easy to avoid any problems. Apache hcnage the line "port 80" to "port 81" and access your website with
http://IP:81/
same can be done with FTP change the port. Most good software allows this.
