PHOTOSHOP problem

All of a sudden my PhotoShop7 won't recognize .gif files. Gif is no longer listed in the drop down file save menu or open menu. Out of the blue. Does anyone know what might have caused this and how I can fix it? I really use gifs a lot.

Wow, I've never seen or heard of this before. What about checking the color bit setting to make sure it's at 8-bits and not 16? I remember setting it to 16-bits by accident and I was limited to the type of file formats to save my images in.

Sorry I tried searching around the closest problem I could find was not being able to save for web as gif because of a low ram issue.

All I can suggest if you've also tried save to web option and sending it to image ready to see if that works, is to try resetting all your tools to default and see if that works. You may also want to make sure that you didn't install another program that is associated with your gif files by looking in documents/tools/folder options/file types and making sure your gif files open with window's picture and fax viewer (which is what mine open with).

There may be a problem with the file formats plug-in.
go to,
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop 7.0\Plug-Ins\Adobe Photoshop Only\File Formats

See if first there is a Gif.8bi file in there.
If there is, try renaming it to Gif.8bi.old or something else and copy this one to that same folder.
Gif.zip
12309 bytes
(Gif.8bi)

Shut down PS, restart it, and see if it works.

Also read that if you have ~ in front of the file, it tells photoshop not to use that particular format (think it's in the help index for your photoshop)

Thanks everyone. Jon had it. I somehow lost the gif plugin in the file format section of adobe. I got it back and now everything is a go. I would never have figured that out on my own. Thanks.:)

I'm glad you got it fixed.
Had the same problem a while back, I won't go into why

If my stupidity can help one person, then I guess it's worth it.
