What do you mean if? They already are. Using the internet to make voice calls was, is, and always will be a "best effort" process that could NEVER equal a proper end to end QoS solution. Sometimes it works ok and sometimes not. In other words, you get what you pay for.
The article is interesting speculation. The author apparently did not do enough research. Any end to end QoS solution won't use the internet anyways. The author seems mistaken in thinking that the cableco's are using their internet bandwidth for their VoIP solution which is a common misconception. Anything they try to do to their internet bandwidth to degrade internet VoIP service will also presumably degrade other things like ping times and what not. IMHO, if they intentionally try "tweak" their network to degrade internet VoIP packets, it can be proven and they will be busted. Sooner or later one of the biggies will undoubtely try it. As long as all the internet VoIP providers can get organized to watch for and fight this sort of thing then I don't think anyone is going to get away with it for very long. |
