I think it depends on the insurance company but from my last car theft experience (It was found in Oakland.. go figure.) .. I'm thinking it'll be at least a month.

As nixen has said to me when we have talked about car troubles, there's always that feeling of wanting the car totaled, especially if the car wasn't anything special to begin with

Good luck though.

The funny thing zak is that car was the "commuter".
We were thinking about getting more of a weekend toy car...
now we have to get something that will perform as both.
Were thinking of a BMW 330i. The bummer is that in the Fall the 06 will be released with a different/new engine and slightly different body type. decisions decisions..

Nobody said you have to buy it new. I just bought a 1994 BMW 325i 4 door. Great machine, performs and looks amazing for an 11 year old car. It only had 73k miles on it as well!

I saw the thread/pic in the cooler. Nice ride.
I did some looking around for a used one, but my heart is crying for a new one.
We will see what carmax has once we get the insureance money (crossing fingers)...

Three weeks later...
Car has not been recovered.
Wife is doing OK now but understandably wants to move ASAP. So house shopping started a week ago.

Insurance company has closed the claim and sent us a check for $18,300.
More than I thought we'd get. Very happy with the claims process. I have been a customer of 21st Century insurance since 02 and would highly recommend them to anyone.

Now to start new car shopping, if there is a bright side to all this, that would be it.

Thanks for everyone and their well wishes. We appreciate it.

Look into installing LowJack in this one. I had it included in my last (2 years ago) Toyota purchase, it cost less than $9/month and is highly effective in recoveries and puts chop shops out of business too.

I have LowJack in one of our vehicles, but honestly, I could probably do without it. If the insurance is going to give you a really good amount on the claim, I'd probably rather take the claim. Besides, I don't keep anything of value in the vehicle.

Most definitely on the next car. I never thought I'd need it when the dealer offered it to us, and I regret not buying it. Won't be making that mistake again.

The LowJack fee is offset by the reduction in cost of auto insurance, ie the premium went down by $8/month by having the LowJack installed (I needed the certificate of installation presented to the insurance company agent to get the discount).
The fact is speedy recovery means less likelihood of the car being damaged or stripped, and perhaps not even having the personal effects gone through yet.
