anon posted : It will not void the agreement because verizon is going to specificly sell an add on adapter to use more batteries with the system.

everything between your house/ont and the exchange is passive. the only thing that is inbetween are fiber patch panels. i got the guys to show me the one that is about 6 blocks from my house.

The battery will give you 8 hours of "Talk time" or about 20+ hours of standby time

Voice uses the most amount of power because the ONT is powering your phone. it is what is amplifying the voice of the other party and making everything ring. so if your ot talking its not doing much work so it uses less power

on my 900amp hour battery i would say i have about 700hours of talk time minimum.

anon posted : I'm curious... a bigger size battery wouldn't void the normal operation or customer agreement for battery backup purposes?
If you use say a 900amp battery, this would guarantee how long: days, weeks of normal use.. please specify to voice only, data or both (can't really say about video because its not available yet unless you know the maximum power drain of the ONT)

I was under the impression that if there IS an outage that theoretically, the fios bridge-boxes are not passive and only have an 8 hour battery backup so theoretically your node would die off more quickly than your fios backup battery..
Can someone clear up these points:
Is only voice service is battery-backed up or the whole unit is backed up or is switchable, video/voice/data (on/off switches)
Are there node batteries in each fiber box on the poles? If so, how long does these typically last?
Will there be QOS guaranteed for voice over fiber, as with copper plant such as generators that kick in for at least 24-48 hours? and will that extend to voice/video in any capacity?

anon posted : Pulled the stock Verizon Battery (brand new) and replaced with a Group 8D deep-cycle truck battery, rated at about 900amp hours. works great, using the fios for data only at this point, unplugged the power, 2 days later the bat is down about 3%. I'm going to leave it unplugged for a week to get a better estimate of power usage. but from what results i have so far i would say if you swapped the batt out for something as small as a good lawn tractor battery you would probably get a good weeks worth of backup power with normal use.

what is the difference between the batt they shipped and one for a tractor/truck/car?
the battery's they ship with the product are "sealed" lead acid. they are sealed so no matter how they are bounced around or turned they will not spill out their contents.

car/truck/lawn batteries have vents to let hydrogen gas out. when a lead acid battery is charged quickly some of the H20 is converted into H and 0 (split by the current running trough the water in the batt). car/truck batteries have the rents to release these volitile gases to prevent explosions. if you charge a truck/car/lawn battery slowly you do not have this issue. if you turn a car/truck/lawn battery upside down they will spill the acid out of the vents this is why they cannot be shipped normally and only by hazmat capable methods.

What about Maintenance?
Most modern truck/car/lawn bats are maintenance free, meaning you do not need to open them up and adjust the fluid level or anything. though it is a good idea to do so anyways once a year. if being used in a house under very very light loads the bats can be expected to last a very long time, 72months+ for a good battery

DanJTCollins posted : The battery is remote from the ONT (in my install they placed it on the wall in my utility room). When it needs replacement, an indicator light flashes on the case. If you check it every few months, you'll know when it needs to be replaced. The battery is a standard unit - it can be ordered from Verizon or third parties. Replacment takes about 1 minute (hinge open the case, unplug, replace, plug in, close case, done).
