What is strange is that after having put the 30GB drive from the new 600m into the original 600m, the original one works just fine... I don't know whether it's because of the fact that it's dried out for a few weeks, or because of the different hard drive.

Now, I have two functioning laptops.... The original 600m will go up for sale since the new one is slightly faster and has a great warranty.

I'll eventually do a clean install, but you have no clue how many things I have on the hard drive right now.... There are even a few software titles that I don't hae the capability to re-install without help from someone else - IE, a friend that gave me a license for Photoshop CS since he had an extra one - I won't able to re-install it without him making a phone call to Adobe.

I keep the crap to a minimum on my machine - I uninstalled most of the factory software that it came with originally, do regular defrags, run AV and anti-spyware software, it runs very well considering it hasn't had a reformat in a year.

I tried my DVD+R drive in one of my roomate's Latitude notebooks, and it runs and burns perfectly (no water damage).

Dell sent me an email saying that the machine had been built and that their "regional shipping center," IE, somewhere within the US (as I don't think they build their machines here in the states) would be shipping out the unit today. Hopefully I'll have it by Wednesday or Thursday.

They weren't able to repair it? And I'm pretty sure that Dell will fix anything (even if the laptop fell) within the warranty. At least I'm sure this is the case with corporate customers/accounts.

Like everyone has said before... you should be able to just swap the stuff from your old Dell to the new one. However, if you have the time, I'd still say do a reformat and a nice clean install of XP.

I ordered one last night to replace the broken one:

600m
14.1" SXGA+ screen, 32mb of video memory
512mb of DDR in two sticks
8X DVD-ROM drive (will take the 4x DVD+R drive from the late 600m and put it in the new one)
30GB hard drive (will use the 60GB hard drive in the new unit)

I was told by a dell tech on an online chat that my installation of XP should still be in tact. Whether or not this is true, I don't know... gdm , your help will be appreciated!

Question: can I use my 60gb hard drive (still works) in a new 600m? Even further - will my installation of XP still be in tact and usable, can it be repaired, or would it have to be reformatted?

Question 2: can my 4X DVD+R drive from my 600m work in a new 600m?

Question 3: will the former 600m battery work in a new 600m?
