Re: FIOS ONT firmware/software upgrades

FiOS moving to DHCP?

That would be a huge move...
Not so huge...there aren't THAT many FiOS users - yet. They would likely just support both for a very long time, and send lot's of messages to users. Most FiOS early adopters are quite comfortable with making the change anyway.

As you say, the sooner they bite this bullet the better, if they plan to do it at all. PPPoE seems to be working fine for them (my PPPoE connection has been up for a continuous two weeks now).

I was on the phone with the FSC in TX for quite a while as they were working on my system Monday. They started with a truck roll for a new ONT, new router too while they were here. That didn't fix my 640 MTU issue (which I told them it wouldn't...duh), so the FSC decided to start really looking into the MTU issue from the CO onward.

Long story short, about 8 hours later (and quite a few calls), they spent an hour+ tracing my endless PING to the FSC to find out my PVC was wrong, so they rebuilt my PVC. That fixed the MTU issues and also increased the reliability (no screaming ONT so far). (Side note: the only way it got done was my ISP guy still had a friend in Verizon from the "old school" days when you could call someone direct to help, and he did.)

I never heard exactly where or on what device the MTU restriction was, but I have a funny feeling the path of the old PVC was for DSL rather than Fiber, so that may have been an issue. Don't know, but will ask later when I cal my ISP guy back.

As for DHCP, the FSC tech was telling me that it looks like a fer-sure thing, as it will be a better way for VZ to go than PPOE. The Firmware upgrade for the DI-604 (and wireless router) is available at:
»www2.verizon.net/micro/dlink/
The VZ techs in TX are still working on a firmware/software patch for the ONT itself.

Interesting day, it was.

PVC? firmware fails

What does the acronym PVC stand for?
Private Virtual Channel???

I tried the firmware update at: »www2.verizon.net/micro/dlink/
Which leads to: »download.verizon.net/dli ··· _nml.bin for the wired version.
The firmware update via the router's web interface fails with:
"The version of the setting file is not compatible"

Earlier, I had tried firmware at: »support.dlink.com/produc ··· 604#firm
(download 1.07 Build 28; 2/25/2005) from an earlier BBR post to the DLink site.
It also failed to upload to the router, with the same error message.

FC (the File Compare utility) says the two files (di604mvl_ddm_v107b28_nml.bin and vdi604_firmware_107b28.bin) are bit for bit identical, just named differently.

I currently have a support request pending w/support, but no response, yet.

I tried the FiOS support phone number: 1-888-553-1555 for tech support.

They directed me to: »www2.verizon.net/help/fi ··· se=21577

yea, yea, yea, continue, continue, continue
Installs an ActiveX update utility.
Asked me for the router's username / password (admin / mynewpassword (default is admin, password or blank, I forget which).

That ActiveX utility seems to claim that:
Firmware Version: 1.07DDM , Thu, 9 Dec 2004
is the most recent.

Wish that designation matched up better with:
1.07 Build 28; 2/25/2005

This the end of the story?

PVC stands for Permanent Virtual Circuit. "Path to the cloud" is another way of putting it
