The Mozilla foundation is a not for profit
They accept donations and make some money
from »www.mozillastore.com/

It's free software (google GPL, GNU, FSF,
BSD, linux, etc for details) and not geared toward
turning a profit.

They don't make money. Being Open source allows them to run without having to hire many people.

You can't get something for nothing. These free services have to be paid for somehow. Either you fork over the money or the companies and organizations get the money somewhere else. To just demand free all the time and complain about ads (which make the thing free) is trying to have your cake and eat it too.

This doesn't just go for browsers, but just about everything that's offered for free or really cheap. Broadcast television, webmail services, radio, Internet access, you name it. Somebody has to pay for it. Better it be advertisers than you.

I was about to respond to this at the bottom of the original post.. I knew it would come sooner or later!!

Firefox is free so how would you like to respond to that??

Firefox is paid for by donations. For you it's free, but someone is indeed paying for it. The people who developed Firefox paid their time and effort into making it. The volunteers who maintain and update it do the same. I suppose they get paid via the donations, which means they rely on the kindness of your heart to keep on doing what they are doing.

So I don't really see a difference between the two in that regard. Both Firefox and Opera need money to keep going. They just go about offering a free browser differently.

What they accomplish is not bothering the end user with 2 things a Fee or a freaking Ad!!

So cut it how you will!

Let me guess you are prob. also supportive of the ads they are adding to tivo users who skip commercials right?

Unlike you I understand the fact you can't get something for nothing. It's all nice that Firefox can come at you with no ads or charges, but be rest assured they have to pay their bills somehow. I don't have Tivo so I have no opinion on it. However I do understand that ads in television and radio are a necessary annoyance. No ads means cheap shows, or worse no shows.

If you want to live in an ad free world then start paying the bill yourself. And enjoy Firefox.

I would agree in some aspect that ads are a "necessary annoyance" to a point.. but one must draw the line somewhere.. Maybe you need to correct yourself because I don't need a lecture from you! Since your saying that I am paying for FF somewhere.. maybe it magic.. maybe they are taking money out of my PayPal account secretly is that it?

Where... in the world... did I say... you are paying for Firefox somewhere? I was talking about television, radio, web mail and all the other stuff that's paid for by ads so you can enjoy them at no cost.

I said if you don't want to live in an ad-free world then pay for the stuff that has the ads. Firefox has no ads. I don't see the connection.
