ping on Telus Dsl vs Shaw on the Docsis formatWhat do you people normally find better for ping times, Telus Adsl or Shaw on the Docsis format. I know a lot of people say, depends who you're pinging and depends on where from. But, what I wanted to know was, on a "general basis" who pings lower within North America. Does Dsl normally ping lower or does Docsis? And what about "in-game". I've noticed that sometimes once you get into the game your ping time will go up on Dsl, but on cable it doesn't. Why is that? and is that normal?
Thanx guys |

When I switched to the SB5100 modem my pings dropped 30-40% in -game (ie CSS, AOM). I'm consistently lower then my friend who has ADSL when we play on the same server. Latency depends on network congestion as well. With cable that can be an issue when you're on an overcrowded node. |

I think ADSL still has a slight advantage but they are very close now with the new DOCSIS modems. Once big thing though is if you have roommates or you like to download and game at the same time. Shaw just has so much more bandwidth that your ping times will hardly be effected if you or roommates are downloading. |

when i used the Telus ADSL i found my ping floated around the 130 range for most the time, now on shaw highspeed i'm down to 60 consistantly. (with docsis modem) |

I'm sorry but I have to say, do you even know what a ping is?
the speed of your connection has nothing to do with your ping, its how far away your ISP's backbone is from the server you are pinging.....
so shaws backbone is closer to the servers you play games on than telus's is. |

Did you read what I posted? You are the same person asking why its not fine to run a server on a residential package in another thread I never knew bandwidth did not matter... Damn I may as well hook up my phone line and bust out the dialup You Sir, are incorrect Also it has largely to do with routing, so the ammount of hops it takes to get to the server. Its not that the backbone is physically closer though. |

Shaw's routing is more superior than Telus, so ping times are generally better. |

I am a big online gamer (since Doom, QW, Q3A, CS, MMO's etc, everything) and please believe me, Shaw DOCSIS is _SUPERIOR_ in every way for gaming than Telus DSL. I had Telus DSL (1.5 and 2.5) for many years before finally switching to Shaw once the DOCSIS network was in place. My pings to west/central/east servers ALL dropped. When I ping -t a server (repeating ping over and over) I get about the same reply every time, 24/7/365, it does not spike based on network congestion. I live in a highly populated area of Calgary. Trust me, you will be much much happier with Shaw DOCSIS for gaming than you will with Telus who have AWFUL routing. If you are playing on a Seattle/California server from Alberta, your traffic is first routed through Winnipeg, down to Chicago and then west to Seattle/SF. What a joke, Shaw has peering along the west coast to avoid this garbage. |

soooo agreeeI agree, shaw's better by powers of 10 compared to the telus dsl for gaming.
One big thing i noticed (though it may be a backbone problem) but i had a packet loss and choke running up to 20 all the time. Now for non gamers, that basically means that my sound cut out every 2 seconds, my mic was useless and i would pause mid game, then unpause half way across the game.. or be dead. very dissapointing! |

Re: ping on Telus Dsl vs Shaw on the Docsis formatNanaimo, BC
Yesterday I had both Telus 2500/640 ADSL, which I had had for a long time, and Shaw's Extreme-I installed, brand new to me, simultaneously. Shaw gave me better latency times for Half-Life mods, and for everywhere else which I checked. Anywhere from 10-30 ping less on Shaw.
A long time Telus user just switched to Shaw. |

Ya I know what "ping" is, do you? I'm asking which system gives lower ping times. Not the "which ever your closer to" answer you gave! LOL! Just because one is closer or further does not always mean the ping will be higher or lower. Distance is not the only factor here, if it were then the ping on dial up would be the same as Dsl. I'm asking the people that have tried both which they find pings their fav. servers faster. Maybe there is no difference, maybe there is. But I'm sure that on "average" one is faster. And yes, bandwidth can affect ping. The closer you get to your max download/upload speed the higher your ping will be. You don't have to believe me, just try it for yourself. |

just to chime in here I noticed my pings went down on some of my favorite quake3 servers withing the last week... By around 30ms-40ms. Wonder if the just upgraded my node or something. Pretty nice but I'm thinking of moving so who knows what I'll get there... |
