Seems to Me...

that the blogger said that his quality of service had decreased and he had had several outages that day. Now, I am not arguing that all ISP techs should help with all services, but in this case, I don't see why there are so many saying he shouldn't have called in the first place. He lost his connection several times in one day. I'd be on the horn with my ISP to, chewin' some ass over my crappy service.

Because his internet access being out has nothing to do with his VoIP. Yes, he should contact Comcast if his internet connection is down. But he shouldn't contact them for help with his third-party VoIP service. That's just stupid.

Complaining about Comcast not supporting your VoIP service because your internet connection is down is a lot like complaining to the phone company that your answering machine isn't working because your power is out. One depends on the operation of the other, but have nothing otherwise to do with each other.

And for what it's worth, I use Packet8 and Comcast and it works just fine and has for a year.

that was my point, but now that I think about it, I don't know if he meant that that his internet connection was down or just his VOIP. Makes a difference on whether I would judge him an idiot or not.

I think we need to look at what the blog and tech meant when saying "support". The differences in definition could eaisly account for a misunderstanding of the situation.

For example, one definition of support: Providing ongoing educational and problem-solving assistance to information system users.

In this instance, I could clearly see where the Comcast employee would be in the right.

Alternatevly, another definition of support: the activity of providing for or maintaining by supplying with money or necessities

Now in this instance, I would say that Comcast is in the wrong. Providing a relatively efficient path to transmit data to and from the WWW would be a necessity of ANY internet service provider.
