[Area] Satellite is much better than Charter internet

For one reason only too, and thats availability. I can get satellite internet service in my area since forever. For the past 5 years I've been waiting for pipeline to be servicable in my area. (Angie, Louisiana) What response do I get? "We're working on it." Funny how Charter makes a commercial downing satellite with that phrase when thats all I get every single time I call to ask if pipeline is available for me. Here you are offering 5MB service now and you haven't even begun to offer your slowest pipeline service to rural areas. Why not service the areas where people want the service but can't get it before you make upgrades to areas who have had the service for years.

Simple. Because Charter will lose subscribers in areas that have a choice. For example I live in LA, I have a LOT of choices when it comes to broadband (which I may exercise soon). If everyone else is offering 6 MB down, Charter needs to do it, or subscribers will defect to DSL. There are hundreds of people per square mile here--they have to concentrate where the money is--just good business sense.

Not to be mean, but if you live in a rural area, you have got to expect you aren't going to have a lot of technology at your disposal. It would cost any cable company a fortune to wire an area where there are like 10 houses. Its not worth it to them.

Do you have phone lines (POTS) in your area? Ask the phone co. when they're going to offer DSL in your area and see what they say. Unfortunately, broadband access isn't considered a utility, so anyone living outside a commercially viable area is left with only one choice for TV/Broadband service.

Nice misleading title you choose.

Should say "Charter is not available to me, so use pos sat"

DSL is the same story. Although I do have more hope for DSL than I do cable. I can get cable TV so why would it be any different to install pipeline? ALl I'm saying is, satellite will always be ahead of cable as far as availability.

DSL, Cable, and Satellite all have their advantages. The problem with satellite is that there is really only one reason to have the service--that is if you cannot get cable or dsl. Satellite has expensive start up costs, is more expensive on a monthly basis, and has a latency problem you have to deal with .
Satellite is very nice for rural areas that have no other option.

Even though you do have Cable TV, it will cost the company to provide high speed internet. It is not just flipping the switch. There is removal of one way amps, installation of two way amps in some areas, fiber installation, cmts' to install, etc. All and all it will be a total re-design of the plant in your area. The bottom line is: Is it really worth spending millions of dollers for x amount of ppl. The return on investment is most likely low in your area.

However, the return on investment to deploy other technology, such as DVRs or Telephone Service, in other areas for the same amount of money to deploy HSI in your area is most likely higher.

Re: [Area] Satellite is much better than Charter i

Ive used the satellite internet be for and let me tell you i would rather have dial-up and ill explain why

1. Ping Sucks
2. You lose your internet during rain
3. FAP and for you that don't know FAP is Fair Access Policy you download more then 200Mb in a hour and your back to 56K speeds
4. the advertised speeds are way off they says 256 up but what they really mean is it can go to that fast and in my year of using it it never got above 16kbps lol

so saying that satellite internet will always be ahead is dead wrong satellite internet to me is far behind dial-up

and be for i forget the direcway ( 2 way system ) was 600$

Yeah isn't your ping like triple than that of dialup to your first hop? Of course if you don't game who cares, but you may want add that in your information so you don't mislead people wanting a better alternative without knowing the facts. Latency, to me, is more important than throughput. I'd rather have a 1.5/256 connection with 5ms to my first hop than a 10.0/1.0 connection with 50ms to my first hop... but that's just me.

I would rather have ISDN in rural area. Yes you can get it in the boon docks, expensive $200 a month with ISP, but was rock solid and hardly had any problesm with it.

Yeah... the 500ms pings were with DirecPC which uses dialup for the upload side.... so about double that for 2-way sat.

I had iDSL when I lived out in the country, was about 35,000 feet from my phone co. 144/144 for around $100 a month, good ping though, which was great for gaming.
