No idea when something newer is coming.

What Wifi card do you have in your PC?

As far as your problem is concered, I have found that if you have unnecessary protocols or services listed in your Atheros connection properties then you might have a slow boot or slow performance. Also you must make certain to remove the older version of the 802.1x driver that loads with the older V3.x drivers as I found this sometimes does not uninstall leaving both the older driver and the newer one in the connection properties.

Next, try to restore the default settings in the Windows firewall and remove any unnecessary dial up connections from the list.

Are you running a third party firewall with Windows XP SP2? be careful some will still have interop issues. Its usually not necessary, just use the Windows firewall.

When reinstalling the V4.1.2.56 driver are you first doing a complete uninstall of the old then rebooting? Also its a good idea to download Crap Cleaner www.ccleaner.com and run this in your system after you uninstall the V3.x driver and rebooted. Once you've done all this, reboot once more then reinstall V4.1.2.56 and let me know how it works for you.
