underattack posted : having similar problems. The "road distance" is about 8000ft. The first loop they installed came in at 9800ft. However, it went dead and the new one is 10,000 ft. It can do 6MBps most of the time, but I just had it switched back to safe mode as it kept dropping during rain.

Why is Speakeasy advertising 6MBps so heavily? Seems like they can't quite deliver the service (and even in the 10kft range there are not too many customers).
--
----DShield.org make the net a safer place.

anon posted : I wish they could make this a sticky somewhere for all dsl providers

Prequal distance does not equal "actual loop length"

the actual loop length cannot be measured until you have a connection on the other end for the measurment to be accurate.

the prequal tool sales uses is based on your address to the CO--an imaginary straight line if you will.

some prequal distances are only a few hundred to a thousand feet off which qualifies you to order the higher speeds. my prequal distance is 3945 ft from the co with actual loop length being 9500ft THEN the phone company added a bridge tap or something that extended my loop to 12,000 ft and I had to downgrade my lines. I was extremely pissed about this. No remote terminal option either because I have onelink and nothing speakeasy can do to fix the issue. I got made credits though :)

grumbly4 posted : Ya.. I figured that it was just sloppy data someone’s DB. That doesn’t lessen the disappoint of finding out actually performance vs theoretical performance. What really sucks is CO distance was a consideration when I was looking for a new place. From the SE ticket:

“It appears loop cannot support anything faster than the Safe Mode configuration.
TheOtherPete posted : Estimating the distance between a location and the CO is a crude process. Once the circuit is up they can take a real measurement of the physical line using an MLT. What you experienced is very normal and common. What sometimes happens and is even more frustrating is getting an MLT result, then later having problems and running it again and finding that you are 2000' further from the CO then the last time the MLT was run!

CO Distance

grumbly4 posted : Hello all. I recently moved and set up new service with SE for 6.0/768. In preprovisioning they came up with my distance to the CO at 6725 so I was thinking I’m golden for getting the full rate. Well time passes, the loop is installed and the service is brought up. Finally over this last weekend I get into really setting up all my servers and for giggles and yucks I fire up a speed test. Much to my dismay it comes back at 2300/400. Gah! Off the diagnostic route I go. A new home run to the drop box eliminating as many connectors as I can bumps me up ~4db in margin (to ~17db) but nothing in bit rate. After double checking everything in the house I cut a trouble ticket over at SE and call it a night. Bright and early the next morning I bounce out of bed to check the ticket status and find out I was provisioned for 3000/512 because …. I’m 10900ft from the CO and not 6725. Well.. that’s quite a bit off. They tweaked the line settings and are able to get me up to 4000/768 in safe mode which isn’t that bad considering the distance.

Now.. the real heart of the question I have is how can my distance from the CO be so far off? Is the process of determining which CO I’m routed to different in preprovisioning and install? Did Quest pull something kinky and put me on a different trunk line to a different CO? More questions then answers at this point.

-chris
