SpeedStream 4200?

I ordered Sympatico HighSpeed, they sent me this 4200 modem, it seems used and a bit old, is this the usual?

It's replaced the 5200 and is supposedly the only modem that Sympatico is handing out these days.

I don't see how you could've received a used 4200, they're very new. I can understand you getting a recycled 5200, but not a 4200. Not yet anyway.

i thought the 4200 was an older model, not a newer one. it would only make sense

Hehehe, Efficient Networks is a weird company. Their consumer modem line model numbers don't indicate that one is newer than the other. For example, Bell started using these modems, in order.

1. SpeedStream 5260
2. SpeedStream 5360
3. SpeedStream 5200
4. SpeedStream 4200

Doesn't make much sense, eh?

well, i cant get it to connect properly, the bell software startup cd thingy seems to configure for a 5200 modem, the modem rarely connects, and when it does, the speed is slower than dialup. i hate my world.

Technically, you wouldn't need to use the software on the CD...it's bound to cause more harm than good.

Yeah.. functionally, the 4200 is a 5200 (or 5242, if you want to get exact). But don't use the software. Instead open up your browser, access the modem at 192.168.2.1 and set it up to handle the connection for you. You get what amounts to an always on connection and don't have unnecessary software cluttering up your PC.

Could you please take your false account of things somewhere else? There's no such modem as 5242. It is 5200 E242 rev.

I apologize if my shorthand offends you; when typing it out hundreds of times per day, it's simply much easier to type 5242 and as everyone knows what it refers to anyway, it doesn't really matter.

If it makes you feel better, I'll amend that to say that functionally a 4200 is identical to a 5200 E242.

So you prefer to misinform people?

As for your comment on the 4200, I am sure it is.

Hitman, who am I misinforming? Other Bell techs? I think we'll both agree that they don't need me for that, I'm well aware that a large portion of my colleagues haven't the faintest idea about the hardware Bell ships. It's not the people who call in, as I refer to it as a 5200 with them regardless of the revision. And the people here have you protecting them from my misinformation, don't they?

Back when I was doing trouble tickets we called the 5200 E242 as the 5242.

The reason was simple: both were 5200, one was a "new revision" but acted differntly for the lights. So it was shorthanded as 5242.

I saw some call it 5200 v1 and 5200 v2... however I personally also used the 5242 shortform.

I would agree with Hitman. Referring to the E242 as the 5242 would simply cause confusion among the average user, especially if they try to determine the modem they actually have (simply because there are no references to a 5242 on the modem label, nor has Efficient/Siemens ever made such an animal). IMO, any moniker like 5200 E242, E242, 5200 with black front panel, are preferable to 5242.

Use to have fun teaching new agents the way to tell the DSL modems appart.

5260 -> 3rd light DSL, first SYS
5360 -> 3rd light ACT, last light ENT
5200 -> 3rd light USB, last light ENT [Famous "What is the 3rd light? Ent... ARe you sure that's the 3rd light?"]
5200 242 -> 3rd light DSL, 5 lights total

Don't know anythign about the new modems...

Devanchaya - The 6520 is fun, because not only did Bell not tell us they were rolling it out until after the fact, but they started shipping them with new kits due to an unavailability of 5200's. So myself and some of my colleagues had the exchange of 'is it a Speedstream? How many lights does it have? 6?!'

decx - I would direct your attention to this :

If they want to take the initiative to find out exactly which modem they're using, by all means. It's not terribly difficult to do, should someone decide they want to know (which, I'd point out, the vast majority of Sympatico users don't). Internally we refer to it as 5242 for convenience.

Yes, but unfortunately may end users posting here refer to the E242 as the 5242 only because that's the name they were told by the CSR. I'm not saying that it was you, but from the posts that have appeared here, I seems quite a number of CSR are referring to it by the wrong name.
