Re: losing synch

the issues i am having are losing connection in hot and sunny weather. anyother time my connection is fine.

the problem has been occasional over the past 2 months.
my location is Sardis Ohio. I probably run through the Hannibal Ohio plant.

my modem model motorolla sb5100. software version
2.3.1.3-SCM00-NOSH

HFC mac address 00:11:AE:C7:E8:3C

signal to noice ratio-38 dB
power level 5db
upstream power level 43dbmv

the cable leading into the home comes straight in through the wall. an adelphia tech installed this. i currently have no splitters.

download results of adelphia speed test- 867Kbps
upload results- 388Kbps

my tweak test result also comes out ok.
any advice or help would be appreciated.

well i talked to a tech. he said replacing the lines would probably solve the problem. they are scheduled to check it tommorow. he thought that was very odd that i was losing connection like that. i also informed him of the slow speeds. he said my ping times and others on the network were unusually high and he would escalate the issue. he was actually very helpful.

Looking up the history of your modem shows that every few days, a huge jump in the transmit level of your modem occurs. It's greater than a 10dB swing, pushing it beyond the max transmit power of your modem. The downstream power and SNR level stay pretty consistent.

Usually this indicates the center conductor in the coax cable isn't making proper contact somewhere, usually due to a loose connector or poorly made connector. Often its in the house cable (especially in attics), sometimes its in the hardline outside, and rarely its in the active components outside.

thanks for looking into it. adelphia called me back and said there is nothing they can do for it since my connection is working fine now. they would check the power levels. kind of aggrevating. my install was done just a few months ago. so i don't think it's the inhouse cable, i'm betting it is in the hardline outside.

would changing my sb 5100 modem to a sb 5120 keep it from diconnecting? is the max transit power any better in the 5120?

No, all modems have pretty much the same max transmit power.

The cable really needs to be fixed.

As Mac said, check the cable/connectors. Just because a tech installed it doesn't mean that a mistake wasn't made. On my initial install, I could not sync the modem. I had run all the coax and crimped F-connectors on it myself. The install tech said he was not allowed to use pre-existing connectors so he cut mine off. After putting new connectors on, the signal levels were all wacky. The installation tech couldn't figure out what it was, so he called a repair tech. The repair tech found that the copper was touching sheild on both ends of the cable the install tech "fixed". He looked at the original ends that were cut off and said they were done better than the install tech had done.

Not to be a prick here, but Mac has troubleshot an ass load of problems like this, and is generally pretty close to right on.

Since any kind of localized infrstructure issue that would cause a 10db spike at your modem, would cause a similar spike in other modems on the same blade/return, I would bet my paycheck that Mac would have noticed that when he looked at your modem history.

well i lost connection again on saturday and sunday all day. i just talked with an adelphia tech and he said their was a problem with the server i was on. i don't think that is the problem. the problem is what the kind people on here says it is it a loose cable somewhere. the adelphia tech i talked too was quite rude he would not issue me a trouble ticket. he claimed i was online for over a day which i was not because my connection was off all day today. one of these days i am determined to get this fixed.
