Re: Install Process

The idea here, where there is clearly only one satellite usable (SatMex5/117)
Ah, so one performs a best-guess setup on any old ACP-equipped transponder to jump-start the process, then calls Direcway with their fingers crossed.

I realize that antenna gain and sub-satellite point have to be considered when setting up outside CONUS, but what's wrong with the AMC9/G3C/G11/G4R footprints? Perhaps SM5 provides the best potential, but surely it's not the only choice (?)

Have you looked at them? According to footprints, all of the other satellites except AMC9 are below minimums for .74 meters in southern Baja. The AMC9 footprint is marginal.

No real world experience to report on AMC9 mobile users there, because it is too new/wrong time of the year, but I wouldn't be surprised to get problem reports if people try it. The others have mostly been tried, with limited to no success.

My last 2 mobile installs where commissioned on AMC9 and the signal was in the mid 70's in So. Cal. I can't report on the consistency but the system seemed to find the satellite ok.

Of course I did, which accounts for why I factored geoloco and antenna gain into the response. BAJADOC listed his own geoloco as southern Baja, but I did not jump to the conclusion that his friend lived next door. Without further input, Baja is a big place, and his friend might even be mobile - or have something bigger than the standard 74cm dish.

Doc - how about some amplifying info to cut down on all the guesswork here?

OK, my friend lives next door.
His dish size is .74m
We are in south Baja, roughly at 109 lat /23long.
So what ever works for me should work for him. Also, I use vonage, and if I'm not mistaken that only works with some "birds". Satmex5 is the best choice I think.
I have disassemled and assembled my setup numerous times, so I think we can set up his system, but needed to know the routine of getting SAN and PIN numbers, and then commissioning.
I know of another neighbor who ordered his system in US, had installer set up his account, and commission it on an already pointed antenna. The antenna was never unboxed till it got to Baja and was set there. Then using dbirdman's little utility, the GPS co-ordinates were changed, and "voila" it worked.

Can't think of any other variables, grogreg.

I still stand by my earlier suggestion, it has worked for others. If it fails for you and you are still in the US then go to an installer and get him to set you up.
