No, you don't have to have phone service with them. I checked as I am about to switch to VOiP provider for phone service as soon as I get my hybrid IPBX configured correctly.

I noticed it does use PPOE as how it 'connects' so I assume as far as telco is concerned on their equipment it's another flavor of DSL, but fiber doens't need or require copper so I don't think it's truely DSL. Could be wrong on that

No, you don't have to install their software, as long as you get the right info either from them or your installer.
