IXSigmaXI posted : Hey, I have a question, lets see if I can make it related to the subject of this thread.

for starters I have a D-Link Revision B DI-624 wireless router. I've been way happier with this thing than I have with the linksys routers and the 1 smc router I had in the past. I run windows XP pro on my IBM thinkpad with a Dell Truemobile 1300 minipci wlan card. I have a RP-TNC pigtail which connects it to the old linksys antenna from one of the many scrapped linksys routers I have.

The network at my university sucks majorly. it seems that like every 10 minutes it disconnects and has to reset itself. I had my DHCP server enabled for a long time and ran on the internal 192.168.1.xx network that I was familiar with. During many such events I would load up my 192.168.1.1 virtual server page and check the connection status, sometimes it showed that my IP can been released from the school's switch, other times it was still connected but there was still no connectivity. the Important part of this is for every router/network-card you want to use to access the network, you have to register the mac address of the client in the school's database. There is an intermediate IP range 168.xx.xx.xx, a bogus IP range for unregistered mac addresses 10.xx.xx.xx, and the range for registered computers 130.224.255.1xx

Today I discovered how to use the AP function of the D624 with DHCP disabled. Before this time I didn't know that I had to switch the position of the incoming wire from WAN to a LAN slot for it to work, but now this seems blindingly obvious. I decided to give it a try. I had disabled DHCP before I knew this and always quickly reset my router because there was no connectivity since I hadn't changed the position of that plug.

My question is this: Is it possible for me to access the control panel virtual server like i used to do by going to 192.168.1.1 with my router running in AP mode on a switch that I do not have access to?

to make this question relevant to the topic: Is it possible for me to install new revisions of firmware for my DI-624 while running in AP mode on a switch that I do not control?

I read on some other FAQ on this website about one guy who used his wireless router as a AP and a linux box as the DHCP server. He wrote a walkthrough so that others could configure their routers the same way because apparently the built in DHCP server is flawed. In this walkthrough he specifically noted that he set his IP of the AP to a value that existed on the internal network that was created by the DHCP host running on the linuxbox. Was this done to allow him to access the router's virtual server page? Is it possible that I can do something like this by giving my router a network address such as 130.224.245.30? How could I do this without losing the ability to communicate with my router (Disabling DHCP makes it impossible for me to access my router via IP, and so does changing the IP of the router)? Would this even be an option on the school network I described?

Thanks alot for any input you can provide.

I upgraded to 2.70 a couple days ago and DHCP does not seem to be working properly for me...and my setup is just like yours.

I use the DI-624 as an AP only....I don't use it as a firewall, and DHCP is disabled on the DI-624 because my network's actual firewall does that function for me. Ever since I've upgraded to 2.70, my laptops no longer get the DHCP reply from my firewall router.

As an interesting side-note, at first (after the upgrade) I *thought* everything was working just fine. This, I have since found, was because I had the laptops hard-wired through the LAN port as well as connected through the wirless adapter....I did this in order to download the WPA2 update from M$. Then I connected via wireless and everything worked fine....unplugged the wireline connection and everything still worked fine. Once the initial DHCP lease ran out...BZZZZZZ...game over...no more IP. I can manually assign and everything works great.

If I plug in the wireline connection...and then renew the wireless adapter's IP...I get one....then I can disconnect (the wireline connection) until I need to renew again.

My gut feeling is that the dedicated DHCP server broadcasts the DHCP response. If the wireline connection is in place...my laptop gets the DHCP reply through the wired lan connection and accepts the IP properly. If I disconnect the wired connection, the DHCP reply never seems to get to my laptop.

Anyway...just thought I'd add to the info on the board. Looks like I'll have to back up to a previous version....too bad the older version I was using crashed all the time.

anon posted : Right up front, Thanks for all the research, testing and reporting that everyone has done for this forum ( & for themselves ).

I haven't upgraded yet, as I'm basing my planning off of the reports of other users/technicians that have had experience with the 2.70 firmware for the DI-624c3. However, I'm already thinking that I won't encounter the same problems that many have reported.

1st, I use a dedicated DHCP server ( rather than the one embedded in my router), and my own DNS servers.

2nd, All Machine security on my LAN is handled via Active Directory, IPsec, and VPN or SSH. None of my neighbors have computers, so overlapping signals aren't a concern in as far as other WiFi devices.

The Problem I see, that bothers me is resets, and honestly, I don't think this is due to some errant setting. As I said, I don't use the router's built-in DHCP server, and my wireless settings are very conservative ( locked in at 11Mbit, as I don't use g, only b). Still, the router resets often... like once per hour or so, and this is "using firmware build 2.42". Over the course of this following week, during the evening when I'm home from work, I'll test various firmware versions and post the results here the following week.

Right up front, I'd suggest hunting down a freeware DHCP server, or if you have the cash to spring, build a dedicated server that runs DHCP as one of it's many hosted services. This way, you'll never be at the mercies of what your router provider thinks is a good solution for DHCP. If you've ever ran a fully-implemented DHCP server then you already know that the embedded DHCP servers barely do enough to really be considered a server, and have in no way, any kind of advanced functionality ( SRV records ). A Linux machine with a decent amount of experience or a Windows 2000/2003 server with a day to read over documentation will get most people up and running in no time ( unless they are the types that look at reading like Superman looks at Kryptonite).

Now, all things aside, I work in Enterprise Tech Support. If any of my employees were to be rude to someone inquiring about a technical problem ( reguardless of how many times we may have covered similar support requests recently ), they would be fired, without question. I've read this entire thread from beginning to end, and more than a dozen times, I've noticed comments that would get any average tech support personnel fired. I'm not picking people out over this, nor will I name names, as it's obvious who has an attitude problem and who doesn't. Some self reflection may do these people well... then again, maybe anger management classes or a psychiatrist is in order. To each their own... until they run into someone who *will regulate* their a$$.

anon posted : I have upgraded my DI-624 to firmware 2.70 yesterday. I have decided to upgrade, to see if my download speed problem disappear (When i go to this site »speedtest.cogeco.net, if my computer is wireless connected to the D-link, my download speed is about 1200/1300kbps, and when i connect directly to the ISP Speedstream modem (Bell Sympatico) i get near 3300/3400, that is correct because i pay for 4000 down and 800 up). Unfortunately, download speed problem still exist. But, what i want to tell you is my difficulties to upgrade, and the result for my Static DHCP with WPA2.

I wanted to make crash recovery provided by Talonn88 to upgrade from 2.53 firmware to 2.70. But, it was impossible to upgrade, i always got the recover page, or router don't respond to ping or anything else. After a while, i have had to downgrade to 2.42 firmware, and after, through the web interface, upgrade to 2.70 firmware. After that, everything was correct, router answer to ping, and i can log to the web interface, in 2.70 firmware. So, i decided to use WPA2-auto, with AES Cipher Type. In addition to the upgrade, i have changed my SSID, to not interact with any previous SSID saved in any profile in my wireless laptop software. I have configured a static DHCP IP address. So finally, when i configuratedmy laptop, with Intel 2200BG wireless card, and latest driver and software, and i have no problem to get an IP address from router DHCP. I disconnected and connected my laptop many times, to ensure that settings keep working.

Result: My laptop, with Intel 2200BG wireless card, can reach the router, and get an IP from DHCP, even with static DHCP entries. My wireless connection is very good (54mbps strong/excellent), and router don't reboot itself.

I hope it will be useful for somebody
