Like the rest of you I am pretty pissed off at this problem going on between these two huge ISP's. I have a gaming server hosted with level3 in atlanta and have Charter as my personal ISP. I can't even get to this server during peak hours. So after months of this problem and over 50 calls to charter complaining I decided to take action. I did a whois lookup on the ip causing the problem and the IP belongs to level3. So I called their troubleshooting NOC. They would not talk to me unless I was a customer, so I told them that I hosted my server with them. I then told them the exact problem and they looked in the logs and could see that every night from 7-11 that router was way over-utilized. They said it was a charter router though. And then they gave me the number to the Charter NOC. Yes the holiest of numbers. This is the number that level3 calls to report outages to ISPs. Well to shorten the story the problem is with the routing table between charter and level3. Level3 temporarily disabled the BGP protocol on this router and ping times went from 250ms to 4ms. So my solution was pretty obvious, leave this protocol disabled. Well I told level3 to disable the protocol and they would not without a written request. So I sent them an email asking them to disable it. Now I got the reaction from everyone that I was hoping for. Both Charter Headquarters and Level3 called me. Both wanted to know who the hell I was authorizing this and why. So I talked to the Charter lady and I told her everything that was going on. She then said "why are you authorizing this change?" To which I replied "This router has been screwed up for 6 months and you haven't done a f*cking thing about it. I have called every night and you have no escalation process. I'm tired of wasting sever hundred dollar a month hosting a server that I can't access" She said she would get a Charter NOC guy to talk to me to get the router fixed and I have not heard anything from her. This router(63.210.88.133) is the GAR router for the handoff between charter and level3. Both of them need to sit down and figure out why it isn't handing off BGP requests correctly. Until then I will keep bugging both of them and I advise everyone to do the same.

No offense man but you were WAY out of line, it is NOT your place to mess with the routing protocol between Level3 and Charter. I am a network engineer with 9 years of experience and I would NEVER touch someone else's network until I understood it properly.

I doubt that they really disabled BGP based on a random email. When I had Level3 as a provider all requests had to come from an address already authorized to make that change. So what happened was your email was just forwarded to Charter and the pings dropping was just a coincidence.

If they really did disable BGP at your request, then I am going to take a stab at what happened, there is a static router with a high cost between Charter and Level3 so when they shut off BGP the static route was still there and you were lucky it was or else you would have just taken down all the Charter customers in this area. Most likely both sides have Cisco routers and they have maxpaths enabled to do some load balancing across multiple links but it is failing. I remember chrtr_sc saying something about all the different links they have so he must be load balancing some netblocks out one link others out another etc and it probably is kind of messy. Obviously something is wrong that needs to be fixed but you would be better served contacting him via this board with the information you recieved or calling the Charter NOC rather than attempting to mess with their network.

Obviously Charter is having a problem and I understand your frustration but mucking with someone else's network is never a smart idea.

cavorn posted : I don't know if anyone will read this, but its pretty funny so I figured I'd post it.

LEVEL3 NOC: 8774538353
Charter NOC: mod note - phone number not found on google removed.

techware_fx posted : Its actually slower. POOP. I Say POOP
I tested a borrowed DNS from COMPANY WHO SHALL NOT BE RANG IN THE SOUTH WITH THE SOUND OF A BELL and it doesn't seem to be the actual DNS look up.

Case in point. When I type in www.google.com down at the status bar I immediatly get "Website Found. Waiting for Data or Transfer" so it seems as if the DNS is actually rather quick.
It looks like the delay is the actual process of starting a data hand shake, like if you remember in the old modem days 2 modems had to sync up before a transfer could start. Almost like that. I don't mean to keep rambling, but any thing I can tell these guys that might help I would like to try.
--
GunMod
