I would call @home and request no installation fees...period!

Say to them that you have seen this offer in many places (i.e. this one) and that is how they will get your business

I payed it at first, and then saw an ad from somewhere else for free installation. I called and was promptly credited.

Damn! And I wanted it so bad right now!!! that I upped the bucks for quick installation. Good idea Pinan - it is at least worth trying. Worst they can do is say NO, and they won't say YES unless you ask.

Excite@home offering self install kit

So far, installing a cable modem involved a visit from one or more technicians. One to install the cable line, another to install network card and modem. This was often advertised as an advantage of cable modems. No hassle figuring out network settings yourself. However, many advanced users disliked waiting for technicians at home, and some users where left with non functioning PCs after the install. Not to mention that all the man power probably cost more than the $50 cable companies usually charge for installations.
Excite@Home announced yesterday a 'QuickStart Kit'. This kit will be sold thorugh Circuit City and CompUSA stores. The kit includes a CD, user guide, cables and connectors. It does not include a network card or a modem.

The kit is expected to hit the streets end of October for $29.95.

The install software will not only guide the user through the actual installation, but also install a number of add ons like a "Support Center" for system analysis, a "Broadband Platform" to easily access @home applications, and an "Info Center" to generate installation reports. These reports should help trouble shooting by @Home's customer service.
Found this on WWW.cablemodemhelp.com/selfinstall.htm

Interesting. Are we going to have to learn to string coaxial cable across town too?

I found out that Cox@Home only charged me for the cable installation . Cox@Home has free installation and first month free promo every 6 months, but I missed the last one.
I did't want to wait anymore, so $49.95 was fine by me.
Besides, my fiance's company pays for the broadband access costs because we can't get the company's dsl in our apartment.

All the information above is good indeed. You also might want to give them a call and tell them you saw the recent ad in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Also around here up until about a week ago they were running commercials constantly on the cable channels (ie HISTORY, TLC & Discovery). Just tell them you saw the ad
